Early Stage Investment locations are under construction!

Sea Isle & Vera Cruz is a nurture anchor location in the East Planning District. As a part of Accelerate Memphis, 35 accelerate/nurture anchors were selected to receive $400,000 each in public improvements.

Construction is complete and Sea Isle & Vera Cruz received the following improvements - Lane narrowing using landscaped curb extensions on Sea Isle road with mid-block crossing to improve safety within school zone of Sea Isle Elementary School, installation of flashing school zone sign prior to curb extension, crosswalk and curb ramps at Sea Isle & Vera Cruz.

The public improvements at Sea Isle Elementary help to provide a safer pedestrian space for students and all other pedestrians in the area. One improvement helping to improve safety is the lane narrowing on Sea Isle Road. John Hopkins University recently released a study citing lane narrowing as a factor in the reduction of traffic-related collisions.

Early Stage Investment locations are under construction!

Macon Rd & A Street (Old Cordova) is a nurture anchor location in the Cordova Planning District. As a part of Accelerate Memphis, 35 accelerate/nurture anchors were selected to receive $400,000 each in public improvements.

Macon Rd & A Street is under construction and receiving the following improvements - Curb extension on Macon at Town Center Circle, a curb ramp, a crosswalk, and sidewalk improvements along A Street from Macon to improve connectivity to the Greenline, and pedestrian signals on Macon at crosswalks.

The first picture shows the beginning of construction of sidewalks along A street to the Greenline. New and improved sidewalks are vital for pedestrian accessibility and safety. A person who uses a wheelchair, cane, walker, or with a mobility issue will be able to safely access the Greenline.

Early Stage Investment locations are under construction!

James Road at Rodney Baber Park is a nurture anchor location in the Frayser Planning District. As a part of Accelerate Memphis, 35 accelerate/nurture anchors were selected to receive $400,000 each in public improvements.

James Road at Rodney Baber Park is under construction and receiving the following improvements - sidewalks, two landscaped medians, one landscaped median with pedestrian refuge, pedestrian signalization, and a crosswalk from Baber Park to the new Frayser Library (currently under construction).

In addition to the improved connectivity of assets, this anchor location is also improving connectivity and safety for all pedestrians as well. The first picture shows truncated domes. Truncated domes are a yellow raised surface serving as a warning signal for a person with a visual impairment or low vision. The raised surface lets them know they are at a crossing and near the street.

Early Stage Investment locations are under construction!

Wells Station & Grey is a nurture anchor location in the Jackson Planning District. As a part of Accelerate Memphis, 35 accelerate/nurture anchors were selected to receive $400,000 each in public improvements.

Wells Station & Grey is under construction and receiving the following improvements - Curb ramps, crosswalks, sidewalk improvements, closure of curb cut on the northern and eastern side of intersection, and protected bike lane with zebra delinators on the southern side of intersection.

Memphis has an excessive amount of unnecessary curb cuts. A curb cut is basically a driveway opening allowing for drivers to enter/leave a place of business. However, you may see a business that has an excessively long driveway and no sidewalks. Closing curb cuts and adding sidewalks provides additional safety and protection for pedestrians - it is now clear for drivers to see exactly where they can enter/exit.

Early Stage Investment locations are under construction!

Summer & Graham is a nurture anchor location in the Jackson Planning District. As a part of Accelerate Memphis, 35 accelerate/nurture anchors were selected to receive $400,000 each in public improvements.

Engineering is installing a new traffic and pedestrian signal system at Summer & Graham for Accelerate Memphis. As a part of the Summer & Graham anchor neighborhood, our department moved the investment to Graham & Faxon, to improve pedestrian safety near and around Grahamwood Elementary School.

Graham & Faxon is near completion and receiving the following improvements - One landscaped median on the east side of Graham before Faxon, one landscaped median with a pedestrian refuge island and crosswalk to improve pedestrian safety near Grahamwood Elementary School (on Graham after Faxon), and sidewalk improvements

A pedestrian refuge island provides a safe place for pedestrians to wait until it is safe to completely cross the street. According to the Federal Highway Administration, a pedestrian refuge island reduces pedestrian crashes by 56%.

Early Stage Investment locations are under construction!

Delano & Watkins is a nurture anchor location in the Frayser Planning District. As a part of Accelerate Memphis, 35 accelerate/nurture anchors were selected to receive $400,000 each in public improvements.

Delano & Watkins is near completion and receiving the following improvements - Closing of curb cuts, sidewalk improvements, curb ramps, crosswalks, and updated pedestrian signalization.

Several of our Early Stage Investment locations are under construction! Each week we will feature two locations under construction.

First up - Merton & Harvard. Merton & Harvard is a nurture anchor located in the University Planning District. As a part of Accelerate Memphis, 35 accelerate/nurture anchors were selected to receive $400,000 each in public improvements.

Merton & Harvard is near completion and received the following improvements - a traffic circle, curb extensions at the the intersection, curb ramps, and sidewalk improvements.

There are very few traffic circles in Memphis. Properly designed traffic circles make vehicles travel slower and reduce the risk of vehicle-pedestrian collisions.

The first Memphis 3.0 Accelerate Memphis project is complete! McLemore Avenue is an early stage investment with improvements featuring street trees, lane narrowing between College and Neptune, street parking, bioswales, and two mid-block crossings for pedestrians.

There are many examples of mid-block crossings throughout the City, some have flashing signals and some do not. A mid-block crossing is a pedestrian crossing between intersections. The location of a mid-block crossing provides convenience to a pedestrian, when an intersection is far away.

Per State law, a driver is required to stop for pedestrians trying to cross at a mid-block crossing, whether or not there are signals. Be sure to slow down if you see a mid-block crossing, as the pedestrian has the right away to cross!

Today, with a heavy heart, I must share the heartbreaking news that has deeply affected our entire fire family. A devastating incident occurred, resulting in the tragic loss of one of our courageous firefighters in the line of duty and three others injured.

With deep grief, we announce the passing of Lieutenant Jeffrey Norman, a courageous and dedicated member of our team who made the ultimate sacrifice. Jeffrey was a leader and hard worker who took pride in serving his community.

Lieutenant Norman began his career with the Memphis Fire Department on September 23, 2002, and faithfully served for 20 years.

During this unimaginable loss, we extend our condolences to Lieutenant Norman's family, friends, loved ones, and Memphis Fire Department brothers and sisters.

From a design concept to construction documents and now construction, the McLemore Avenue Accelerate Memphis Early Stage Investment, is progressing rapidly. One of the most exciting features is the addition of bioswales.

Bioswales are essentially ditches or channels that feature certain types of plants that help to capture, treat, and filter stormwater runoff. Bioswales not only help to remove debris and contaminants and keep them from entering our water, they also can help to reduce flooding.

Last Friday, a ground breaking for the Accelerate Memphis Early Stage Investment on McLemore Avenue was held. Improvements will include street trees, lane narrowing, a mid-block crossing for pedestrians (cars are required by state law to stop and allow pedestrians to cross), street parking, and green infrastructure (assists with water run-off filtration). Construction starts this month!

Collins Yard at 304 Collins Street will be open every weekend for Memphis residents to take out their trash.
