The Memphis City Council approved MLGW's proposed rate hike. It means your bills will be going up by 12% in the 2024. Also the city council delayed the transfer of Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium to the University of Memphis. We'll explain the back and forth this morning.

A major Downtown Memphis road will now be open 7 days a week. The Memphis City council scrapped the weekend closures on Riverside Drive that have been in place since the street reopened last month.

It is the final day of the Action News 5 Holiday Food Drive! We are spread out at Kroger locations through Memphis and the Mid-South! All morning long I will be at the Germantown Kroger beginning at 6am! We are accepting canned food and monetary donations to fill the shelves of the Mid-South Food Bank. The food bank serves 31 counties across Tennessee, Mississippi and Arkansas.

Here are some of the stories we're following:

Dozens of dogs found in a reported dog fighting ring in Panola County, MS. According to Panola County Sheriff Shane Phelps, the department was able to find 30 dogs involved in the fighting ring on Rayburn Rd in Como Mississippi. We'll go in depth this morning on WMC5.

Memphis police say four businesses were burglarized Friday and Saturday morning and all may be connected. Prescott Express on Prescott Road, Romantix on Getwell Road, Soul Fish on South Cooper, and Sugar Ghost on Broad Avenue. The suspects took items such as t-shirts, a safe and cash register.

The Memphis Tigers are playing in a bowl game for the 10th straight year that's the longest streak of any non-power 5 school. Tigers are playing in the Liberty Bowl, Ole Miss is playing in the Peach Bowl and Tennessee is in the Citrus Bowl. We'll go through the bowl selection and reaction this morning on WMC5.

City proposes $120M for Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium, transfer of ownership to UofM The City of Memphis has launched a proposal that will provide major funding for Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium as well as transfer ownership of the stadium to the University of Memphis Auxiliary Services Foundation.

Shots fired in a busy shopping center. Memphis Police say someone fired several gunshots yesterday afternoon outside of Kroger in Poplar Plaza at Poplar and Highland. We look at the growing crime problem and what lawmakers are trying to do to stop it.

Memphis once again broke the homicide record for the year and we still have a little six weeks left in the year. You might see more Tennessee Highway Patrol troopers on interstates in Shelby County. Next week Governor Bill Lee says an additional 15 to 20 troopers from other districts will join a surge of added law enforcement officers in Shelby County.

Christmas is kicking off in Collierville. The annual Christmas Tree Lighting on Town Square is happening tonight at 5:30. Families can visit Santa in the Gazebo in the Town Square 10am to 2pm every Saturday until Christmas.

One Tennessee lawmaker is proposing a bill to eliminate the state's grocery sales tax. Tennesseans do not pay a state income tax and now one lawmaker would like to see the grocery sales tax removed as well. Details on that proposal this morning.
