Are you a Beatles fan? On this day in 1966, August 19, the Beatles performed twice in Memphis at the Mid-South Coliseum as part of their U.S. tour. It was a BIG DEAL.
This tour took place after John Lennon made the remark that the Beatles were "more popular than Jesus."
Our Special Collections department has a collection of memorabilia related to these concerts, which can be viewed online in our Digital Commons, a digital repository.
This collection includes a photo of a press conference and more. One of the items is an ad for the concert. Tickets for reserved tickets were $5.50, and depending upon which website you use, that same ticket would be roughly $48 to $54 today, due to inflation.

On this day 70 years ago, 19-year-old Elvis Presley performed his first concert at the Memphis Overton Park Shell as an opening act. Sadly, we do not have a picture of the performance that launched his career. However, we have some Elvis items in our collection, including our Digital Commons, which contains items from "The Commercial Appeal" newspaper morgue.
