Lausanne faculty continue to inspire our alumni!

Lausanne is proud to have passionate teachers like Mark Page, whose impact helped alumni Dylan Andrews '20 discover a passion for chemistry in high school and set him on a path toward a fulfilling career in medicine. Dylan, now a senior honors chemistry major at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, has excelled in his field of study and was recently featured in a "Rising Scholar" article in the school's Higher Ground E-magazine. In the article, he credits Mr. Page for inspiring his love for chemistry and shares his experiences since graduating from Lausanne leading up to now as he prepares for the final semester of his undergraduate program before entering medical school. Henry Rothenberg ‘01 was born and raised in Memphis and is currently living his childhood dream as a Meteorologist and Storm Chaser. His career has taken him to Missouri, Tennessee, California, South Carolina, and back to Tennessee where I serve as a Meteorologist in Nashville for the #1 CBS affiliate in the country, NewsChannel 5. Henry is also a four-time Emmy Award winner. He is currently working on a story about the relationship between weather and Tennessee’s second largest export - whiskey! Specifically, how the most famous brand of whiskey in the world - Jack Daniel’s - depends on the volatile climate in the region in making the product.

What advice do you have as an alum to a current student?

If you have the slightest interest in something, seek out guidance and reach out to start making connections. I emailed all the stations in Memphis my junior year and got responses from most. But, because of those emails I had the pleasure of shadowing Todd Demers of NewsChannel 3 my junior and senior year, putting me ahead of the game. I credit Todd as a big part of getting my first job my junior year of college.

What is one lesson that you learned from Lausanne that has stuck with you?

Never be afraid to ask questions. We all have different styles of learning. For some, A’s and B’s come easy. For others you bust your rear to make a C. Never judge yourself by others. Embrace your strengths and keep working hard on what you feel are your weaknesses. You’ll come out stronger in the end.

Who/what is your daily motivation or inspiration?

My family, specifically my parents. They’ve always been my number fans, and when I needed words of encouragement when down they always knew what to say! Especially my mom. My mom went back to college while also being an incredible mother and wife. Despite being a full-time student she was always there for us. Her ability to juggle so much and make it look easy inspires me to this day!

Amaya Taylor '24 has been at Lausanne for her entire high school career. She is active in the arts and am editor-in-chief of both PRISM and the yearbook. She is also a Project Manager and Creative Director for Lausanne Design Agency, designing for theater, school clubs and OrthoSouth. Amaya has written for the student paper and was featured in a special edition of the Yale Daily News. She received honors from the Scholastic Art Awards (silver and gold keys in digital art and photography) and have been recognized at the University of Memphis’s Wordsmith Writing Competition and the Scholastic writing awards.

She will be a freshman at Princeton in the Fall, where she hopes to pursue an English or Political Science degree, then attend law school, all using the creative problem-solving skills she has learned at Lausanne to help under-represented groups.

To incoming freshmen:
The most important thing you will take from high school is finding who you are and what you love - don’t focus on limiting yourself to what you think will look good on a resume. I had no idea that theater, graphic design or photography would be important aspects of my identity and personality. The opportunity to explore these wasn’t available at my old school, and it is so important to take advantage of what Lausanne provides. I wish I’d known that it’s more than okay to reach out for help. Teachers are exceptionally kind, understanding and considerate, and Lausanne’s culture is unique in fostering meaningful connections between teachers and students.

Coming to Lausanne was my first experience interacting with a community of people from different backgrounds and cultures, and it taught me to be curious about others and eager to learn about differing perspectives, and my friends have motivated me to step outside my comfort zone. I appreciate Lausanne for shaping me into someone with an open mind, which will be important as I continue my academic career at Princeton and beyond.

Sally DePriest Whitehornn ‘82 is a proud graduate of Lausanne, having only been a boarding student for two years, but that short stint altered her course, in life changing ways! Her world view was vastly expanded, writing skills sharpened and confidence bolstered. After a rewarding career in the non-profit arena. She is a Sr. Multimedia Consultant for the Memphis Business Journal where she has worked for the past 9 years. She also serves on the Lausanne Alumni Board and is fortunate to be the parent of Emma Whitehorn Fleming ’17 and Julia Whitehorn ’19. She and husband Lowry are thoroughly savoring the life of empty nesters, traveling and living downtown Memphis!

Sally has enjoyed a long career sharing stories and connecting people through her years of work at The Memphis Sexual Assault Resource Center, LeBonheur Children’s Medical Center, Lausanne, The Make-A-Wish Foundation, Greater Memphis Chamber and now MBJ.

What advice do you have as an alum to current students:
Don’t wish your time at Lausanne away. Savor this precious time and how Lausanne is truly preparing you for college and beyond. Your teachers truly care about you and will challenge you to reach your best potential. Listen, be open minded and strive to make the world a better place. You are fortunate to have this incredible experience so don’t take it for granted.

What advice do you have for young professionals seeking a similar career path?
Be humble and seek to serve, not sell. The reward will come from this focus. Understand the need to pay your dues to learn fundamentals and a business possibly from the ground up before expecting promotion or to be seen as more of a valued consultant. Remain grateful and thank your management team, colleagues and clients often for their role in your life.

What is one lesson that you learned from Lausanne that has stuck with you:
Be amazed by those from different backgrounds and cultures than yours, respecting and growing from these connections.

Who/what is your daily motivation or inspiration?
My husband, who leaves me notes of reflection and appreciation each day and my treasured family and friends.

"The most important thing I took away from high school was the relationships I built along the way, both from the friends and teammates I had but also the relationships with my coaches. High school is a tough time and the friends you make during that time are some of the closest friends you will have in your life. Same goes with the coaches I had. I still talk regularly with many of my coaches and a lot of them have given me valuable advice about everything from the sport itself to family to just life in general. We say “Lynx4Life” so much it’s almost cliché but it’s true, many of the people I’ve been fortunate enough to meet while at Lausanne are people that will be with me for the rest of our lives. This school will always have a special place in my heart because of that.

Time management is probably the most difficult learning curve you’ll experience when you get to campus. It’s not high school anymore – no one is waking you up in the morning, no one is checking to make sure your assignments are done, no one is going out of their way to make sure you’re on top of your responsibilities. There will be long hours, there will be late nights, there will be early mornings and things regular students don’t have to deal with. There will be times you have to make sacrifices that other regular students don’t have to make and that’s just part of what comes with being a student-athlete. It’s not easy to balance schoolwork, a social life, your sport, sleep, etc. But that’s what makes what we do as student-athletes different from everyone else.

I did have a signing day at Lausanne. We (c/o 2017) were the first group of football players to sign multiple players to Division 1 schools. That was very special to us and something we took a lot of pride in. I remember the day being a day of celebration for all of us and reflecting on the work that it took for us all to get to that point. It was an incredibly memorable moment for all of us and something we still reflect on from time to time."

Miranda Watson ‘24 has been attending Lausanne since the fifth grade. Throughout her time at Lausanne, she has learned numerous things about life and met people from literally all over the world. Although her time here is coming to an end, she has enjoyed it and says that this school has helped to accomplish some of her biggest goals such as getting into her dream school, Tuskegee University, which is where she will be attending this Fall and majoring in Nursing.

During her time at Lausanne, she has participated in many clubs and extracurricular activities. She was a part of the Varsity Cheer team during her ninth and tenth grade year and the Varsity Pom team during senior year. While being a part of these activities she was able to obtain awards with her team in places such as Regional Championships and several bids to National Competitions.

What advice do you have for the incoming freshman:
New incoming freshman I would like to inspire you to be yourself coming into high school. You should never be afraid to talk to your teachers and remember to always advocate for yourself in every situation.

Valuable lesson that you have learned at Lausanne that has stayed with you throughout your school career:
Lausanne has taught me that I have the capability to do things that I never thought I would be able to. This school has taught me to expand my horizon and step out of my comfort zone when it comes to situations in and outside of the classroom.

Who or what inspires/motivates you:
My biggest inspiration is my little sister, Morgan ’31. She inspires me each day to keep going with her encouraging smile and her unforgettable personality. When I'm feeling defeated, she inspires me to be able to keep going in hard situations.

Shreyas Nath ‘24 plans to attend the University of Illinois Urbana Champaign (UIUC). He will be majoring in Architecture with a minor in Finance. Some of his accomplishments include the National Honor Society, Rho Kappa National Social Studies Honor Society, National Art Honor Society, All-Region (Tennis), All State (Tennis), two-time Tennis Team State Champions and Individual Doubles State runner up.

What advice do you have for the incoming freshman?

I think the best advice I have for freshmen is to talk to your teachers and utilize the tools you have at your disposal. Lausanne has a really great support system, if you are under stress, feel like you are falling behind or need more time for an assignment. You can just talk to a teacher, and they will find a way to help you and make sure you succeed. For me, I feel like this is one of the main ways Lausanne prepares us for the outside world. I feel more comfortable engaging and communicating with my teachers.

Valuable lesson that you have learned at Lausanne that has stayed with you throughout your school career:

Being a very involved student athlete, I quickly learned the importance of time management. Being able to stay on top of my schoolwork, as well as things I do in my personal time was something I struggled with at first. Figuring out a system to stay organized and on top of my work helped with my overall school experience. Creating that system is something that took time and I will use it in my future college education.

Who or what inspires/motivates you?

What truly motivates me is the desire to always do my best in everything I do. This comes from understanding that giving my all everyday helps me grow as a person. Whether it's facing new challenges, exploring different parts of life, or learning from different viewpoints, this commitment keeps me moving forward. Even when things get tough, like when I started the IB Program while staying active in sports, I've learned to manage my time well and never give up. Overcoming these challenges didn't just help me get by; it helped me succeed.

CJ Hampton ‘24 hopes to attend Alabama State University to pursue his love and passion of Dance. He started dance while attending Lausanne his eleventh-grade year and has grown a huge love for it.

Since dancing, CJ has accomplished so many things! He was accepted into the Governor's School of the Arts for Dance just after his first year of dance classes. He also made the cover art dance poster for this year's dancers. He has been here to help Mrs. Jones, Lausanne’s Upper School Dance teacher, with different choreography opportunities. CJ ‘24 has had the opportunity with Lower, Middle and Upper school musicals and the Middle School Pom Team. He attended UDA Camp over the summer and won an All-American Dancer Award.

What advice do you have for the incoming freshman?
You won’t be able to please everyone. When I enrolled at Lausanne, I was the new kid in town, so I really didn’t have any friends. When I did start to make friends, I tried to please and be everyone’s friend, which never works out. Just be yourself!

Valuable lesson that you have learned at Lausanne that has stayed with you throughout your school career:
Do not procrastinate! Go ahead and get your work done, because the more you procrastinate the more work you are building up. That is just more stress you caused yourself.

Who or what inspires/motivates you:
My family, dance teacher (Mrs. Noelia Jones) and my school family. All of those people make sure I'm ok throughout the day and always makes sure I am on top of my work. They will always want the best for me. They also show me, every single day, that you can accomplish anything you put your mind to and with me just starting dance I am always having to prove myself.

Amalia Pompe van Meerdervoort ‘24 has attended Lausanne since the eighth grade when she moved from Massachusetts to Tennessee. She has a younger sister, Olivia ‘26, who also attends Lausanne and a very supportive mother, father and dog named Wheatabix. She will be attending Dartmouth College in the Fall and plans to study Quantitative Social Sciences with a minor in Economics. During her time at Lausanne, she has played soccer and tennis on the Varsity level for all four years, with numerous state appearances in tennis. She has also been an involved member of the band, attending honors conferences, such as the UT Martin Honor Band and All West. Alamia ‘24 also serves as the President of the Music Honor Society, Tri - M. She reignited a Tennis and Tutoring program through Tennis Memphis that focuses on bringing education to the forefront of every community. Amalia is a member of the National Honor Society, Cum Laude Society, National English Honor Society, Sigma Society, Rho Kappa Society, Quill and Scroll, National Spanish Honors Society, National Art Honors Society, Junior Art Honors Society and Modern Music Masters Honors Society

What advice do you have for the incoming freshman:
I would tell any incoming freshman that the relationships they form with their teachers, classmates and themselves will only increase in importance over their time in the Upper School, so reach out to others! Don't take any interaction for granted; always be focused on supporting those around you.

What valuable lesson have you learned at Lausanne that has stayed with you throughout your school career:
Lausanne challenged me academically and personally to grow into who I am today, teaching me that you only get out as much as you put in.

Who or what inspires/motivates you:
My dad inspires me the most, despite any odds, he has shown me the value of hard work in creating a life for oneself and their family. His selflessness and dedication have provided me not only with a wonderful role model to aspire to be but also the best father.

Michelle Liu ‘24 joined Lausanne in the seventh grade and has grown a lot throughout her journey with the Lausanne community. From joining the Model United Nations/Youth in Government club to becoming the president of the science bowl club, she really felt the support of her peers, teachers and the Lausanne community. After Lausanne, Michelle hopes to major in Economics and Engineering, as she thinks the combination would allow her to have a unique perspective of the world.

Michelle ‘24 was recently inducted to the Cum Laude Society at Lausanne, but outside of school, she is really happy to have been able to attend the Governor's School for Sciences and Engineering. She had an amazing experience and met some of her closest friends.

Michelle’s advice to incoming freshmen:
I would say to take advantage of the resources at Lausanne. For example, I had an amazing experience with the National Honor Society tutoring program when I was a sophomore. Now, as the NHS president, I am really happy that there is this amazing program at Lausanne.

A valuable lesson that Michelle learned at Lausanne:
Talk to my teachers! Before coming to Lausanne, I would have never thought to even say a word to my teachers. However, Lausanne changed my perspective in that it is really beneficial to talk to my teachers, not only on academic related things, but also just small, everyday things.

Who or what inspires/motivates you:
My mom! I really admire her ability to not only work hard under any circumstances, but also to have a positive outlook on life. Her positive attitude really motivates me to think positively about everything in life.
