Congratulations to the ALSAC Global Scholars Executive Leadership Program Graduates! As part of our ongoing partnership with ALSAC/St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Dr. Erin Nelson provided leadership development training to these scholars as part of their 9-month executive education program. Through this program, scholars from 8 countries across the globe learned and implemented capacity building techniques to strengthen their organizations’ fundraising, HR, and marketing practices.
The scholars arrived in Memphis for their program graduation at ALSAC and visited the UM campus to meet with our DPNA professors, Dr. Erin Nelson & Dr. Sharon Wrobel; our CAS Dean, Dr. Abby Parrill-Baker; Graduate School Dean & Associate Dean, Dr. Deb Tollefsen and Brian Meredith; and EVP for Research and Innovation, Dr. Jasbir Dhaliwal.

A new report from the Institute for Philanthropy and Nonprofit Leadership at The University of Memphis and the Women's Foundation for a Greater Memphis on the status of women and children in Tennessee and Shelby County.
Memphis, TN: The biggest issues facing women in Tennessee and Shelby County are poverty, economic insecurity, and lack of educational attainment. Fifty-five percent of all Tennesseans living in poverty are females, with 15.1% of females in Tennessee and 18.1% in Shelby County living below the poverty line. Women in Tennessee earn .80cents for every dollar earned by their male counterparts and 21% less annually than the median annual earnings for men.
This report offers the first look at the status of women and children in Tennessee since 2000. It is unique in that it also examines Shelby County, comparing findings with Tennessee broadly. A study of this kind specific to Shelby County has never occurred before. The report's status section helps educate the public, other nonprofits, advocates, and policymakers on the status of women and children in Tennessee and Shelby County. This report includes a special look at women’s philanthropy in Shelby County and the nonprofits they fund. Drawing on interviews with female philanthropists and surveys of philanthropists and Memphis-based nonprofits, findings speak to the state of philanthropic and nonprofit efforts to support and advance women and children.
About the Institute for Philanthropy and Nonprofit Leadership: The Institute for Philanthropy and Nonprofit Leadership (IPNL) promotes effective philanthropy, advances nonprofit leadership practice, and strengthens the nonprofit sector through education and research. Our vision is to serve as a portal for nonprofits to access the expertise and opportunities at the University of Memphis and for students and faculty to access the rich context available for engaged scholarship, service learning, and applied experiences.
About the Women’s Foundation for a Greater Memphis (WFGM): For more than two decades, the Women’s Foundation for a Greater Memphis (WFGM) has played a major role as a backbone organization aligning people, resources and coordinating community-based services through the two-generation approach to reduce poverty. WFGM is an organization of women helping women break the cycle of poverty through philanthropy, leadership, and collaboration.
