In the world where buildings rise, our journey finds its start,
With pencil lines and grand designs, we craft with all our heart.
But deeper than the lines we draw, there's so much more we do,
We curate spaces, safe and bright, for all, and not just a few.
We navigate through codes and laws, each regulation's maze,
With sustainability in mind, we plan for brighter days.
Materials and details fine, we know them all by name,
Nature’s best, we let it shine, while guarding 'gainst the flame.
Practical, yet full of dreams, we make from nothing, gold,
Balancing budgets, tight as seams, our timelines firm we hold.
We listen to each voice and thought, and learn from every tale,
We track and log, with care we jot, through every rise and scale.
Layouts perfect, flowing free, efficiency our aim,
In reality, our dreams we see, each design a claim to fame.
We wonder how folks think and feel, as through our works they pass,
Reliable, with futures real, while honoring the past.
We are the architects, and more, with art and science blend,
Turning empty spaces to lore, on which lives will depend.
Our work a symphony so grand, each building tells a tale,
From soaring spire to humble land, through us, the dreams prevail.

Reimagining Memphis Through Music
The Vision for W.C. Handy Park Amphitheater
In the heart of Memphis, a city that once reverberated with the rhythms of the blues and the rifs of rock, lies an opportunity to rekindle its musical legacy for a new generation. While the city's tagline, “Home of the Blues and the Birthplace of Rock & Roll” is found prominently on billboards, the question remains: Where is it in action? How can we ensure this rich heritage is not just our past, but it continues to thrive in today's world and beyond?
Looking to cities like Chicago, Los Angeles, Brooklyn, and even Nashville, we find inspiration in their successful outdoor music venues like Millennium Park, The Hollywood Bowl, and The Bandshell. These spaces have become cultural epicenters, drawing both locals and tourists into a shared experience of art and community. Memphis has its own history of communal music spaces such as The Overton Shell and GPAC, proving there is a local appetite for open-air gatherings.
Enter designshop's concept for the renewed W.C. Handy Park Amphitheater. Envisioned as a modern venue, this design aims to amplify Memphis's musical essence through architectural innovation. The proposal includes a multi-level performance stage and lawn seating designed to immerse attendees in sound, allowing them to move about and dance, as they feel the music. This revitalized space promises to breathe life into downtown Memphis, transforming it into a vibrant hub of musical and communal activity.
The benefits of such a project extend beyond mere entertainment. It serves as a catalyst for social interaction, connectivity, and sustainability, integrating green spaces that improve the community's quality of life. This vision aligns with the essence of Memphis — as much or more than Elvis, beyond BBQ, a city of undeniable musical genius.
This initiative is not only about cherishing what was but propelling Memphis into what it can be. A dynamic, living testament to its musical roots, inviting tourists and locals alike to engage first-hand with the city's identity. - it's time for Memphis to sing louder than ever.
Let’s collaborate to turn the W.C. Handy Park Amphitheater into a beacon of Memphis's future — a future where music continues to define, unite, and inspire us all. Join us in making this dream a reality, ensuring that the soul of Memphis not only endures but evolves.

“The Warehouse,” is a mixed-use complex in downtown’s French Fort district. This innovative conversion of an office building and attached shipping warehouse brings retail, restaurant, and residential spaces to the area. The concept exemplifies the first step in revitalizing the vacated industrial buildings, offering modern living and dining options. We’ve focused on changing the mood by enhancing transparency and openness with a glass exterior, while creative screening features provide shade and comfort.
If you have a similar opportunity to transform an industrial property into a thriving urban community, then let’s talk through the possibilities together!
The essence of architecture's social role lies in its ability to influence how people interact within the spaces it creates. Thoughtful design can enhance a sense of belonging, encourage gatherings, and facilitate interactions among people.
Today is the day that we celebrate designshop’s trip around the sun. We pause to remember the journey and the many kind and wonderful people and events experienced along the way. So many to thank for their wisdom, courage, tenacity, humor, grace, drive, patience, trust, grit, love and support… we simply can’t thank you enough for shaping and molding us. Sending air hugs out all day today! Cheers to #11
Buster’s Butcher stands out as a one-of-a-kind meat market, seamlessly blending top-tier USDA products with a rich and vibrant retail ambiance. Housed in a space that once served as a sandwich shop for three decades, its strategic location adjacent to Buster’s Liquors presented an ideal opportunity for a fresh new beginning. Brothers Josh and Morgan Hammond joined forces with master butcher Brad McCarley, and enlisted the creative designers at designshop to conceptualize this innovative venture.

A look into Lamplighter’s light-filled, colorful, and playful interiors!
The design concept began with the idea of replicating the simple gable form of the main, existing building on site. The programmatic elements within the addition are divided along a double-loaded corridor with 1/2 of the building rotated at an angle to address entry from the parking lot, bypassing the existing building. The resulting triangular interior space serves as a figured void housing circulation and unprogrammed learning space. Its vaulted space is designed to create an inverse form of what could be perceived as a child-like drawing or idea of a school house.

Sustainable Architecture:
Design with the Future in Mind
Sustainability has become a key consideration in modern architecture. As architects, we have a responsibility to design buildings that not only meet the needs of users but also minimize the impact on the environment. In this post, we'll explore the importance of sustainable architecture and how architects can design buildings that are both functional and eco-friendly.
The Importance of Sustainable Architecture
Sustainability is critical to the future of our planet. Buildings account for a significant amount of energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, making it essential for architects to design buildings that minimize their environmental impact. Sustainable architecture aims to reduce waste, conserve resources, and create a healthier environment for users.
How Architects Can Design Sustainable Buildings
1. Incorporate energy-efficient systems: Energy-efficient systems such as solar panels, geothermal heating and cooling, and high-performance insulation can reduce a building's energy consumption and lower operating costs.
2. Use sustainable materials: Architects can use sustainable materials such as recycled steel, bamboo, and reclaimed wood to minimize the environmental impact of building construction.
3. Consider the building's orientation: The orientation of a building can have a significant impact on its energy consumption. By orienting a building to take advantage of natural light and passive heating and cooling, architects can reduce the need for artificial lighting and HVAC systems.
4. Design for adaptability and durability: Buildings that are designed for adaptability and durability can reduce waste and extend the lifespan of a building. Architects can incorporate flexible floor plans and modular design to accommodate future changes in use and reduce the need for demolition and reconstruction.
The Benefits of Sustainable Architecture
1. Reduces environmental impact: Sustainable architecture can significantly reduce a building's environmental impact, conserving resources and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
2. Lowers operating costs: Energy-efficient buildings have lower operating costs, leading to significant savings for building owners and users.
3. Promotes health and well-being: Sustainable buildings can promote health and well-being for users, improving indoor air quality and reducing exposure to toxins.
Sustainable architecture is essential to the future of our planet. By incorporating energy-efficient systems, using sustainable materials, considering the building's orientation, and designing for adaptability and durability, architects can design buildings that meet the needs of users while minimizing their impact on the environment. The benefits of sustainable architecture extend beyond environmental conservation to include cost savings, improved health and well-being, and a brighter future for generations to come.
5 Suggestions To Turn Your Empty Retail Strip Center Bays into Revenue-Generating Spaces
According to data from the U.S. Census Bureau, there were 4.4 million new businesses in the United States in 2020. The numbers for the previous years were 4.4 million in 2019 and 4.3 million in 2018. However, please note that these figures refer to the total number of businesses created in the given year, including both employer and non-employer businesses.
If tenants are hard to find and those vacant bays are collecting dust, consider the following alternatives as a temporary, or even permanent, solution for occupying and activating your retail center.
1. Offer short-term leases: Consider offering short-term leases to small business owners or entrepreneurs who may need a temporary space to test out a new product or service. This can be a great way to fill vacancies quickly and generate income in the short term.
2. Host pop-up shops or events: This can be a great way to bring foot traffic to your center and create excitement around the businesses that are already there.
3. Create shared workspaces: Convert the empty bays into shared workspaces or co-working spaces. This is a popular trend that can attract freelancers, entrepreneurs, and startups who are looking for affordable office space.
4. Consider alternative uses: Think about alternative uses for the space. For example, you could turn an empty bay into a fitness studio, a music or art studio, or a small theater. Be creative and think outside the box!
5. Partner with local organizations: Partner with local organizations, such as schools or nonprofits, to provide space for events or programs. This can be a win-win situation for both parties: you get to fill the empty bays and the organization gets a space to hold their event or program.
Whatever the best option might be for your situation, engage an architect to layout the space, confirm code and zoning implications, and to design the right environment that will attract and inspire customers.
