Oops! Busted! That 9pm meal...
The Oura police are getting quite good. Remember the 12-3 Rule:
๐ซ Stop eating 3 hours before bed
โฑ 12 hours of fasting between dinner and breakfast
This rule is one that will support you in optimizing your sleep architecture and waking up rested and energized.
A patient of mine - an entrepreneur, husband, father of three and all around busy, standup guy who also happens to be a COVID-19 "long hauler", recently experienced a rare health turnaround.
After twenty years of poor sleep, he's added almost TWO HOURS of additional sleep each night. Needless to say, he's feeling much more balanced and has sustained energy in the afternoons.
How did he do it? He got over his "yeah buts". You know these well:
"yeah but, I was so tired after a long day at work I didn't feel like going for a walk"
"yeah but, I was stressed and needed a few nightcaps to wind down"
"yeah but, I have a hard time stopping my spinning wheels at night so I put a movie on my iPad in bed"
The "yeah buts" list goes on and on. And many of them are not only common, they are reasonable. This post celebrates one guy who overcame his "yeah buts" and is living the life he's been waiting twenty years to live. If he can climb over that pile of "yeah buts", you can too. This patient of mine did the following:
๐๐ป started eating dinner earlier and in smaller portions
๐๐ป shifted to a low sugar diet
๐๐ป kept a strict schedule - in bed before 10pm and up by 6am
๐๐ป reduced his screen time at night, and wore blue blocking lenses
๐๐ปintroduced 150 minutes of exercise per week (five 30 minute sessions)
๐๐ปstarted taking these:
GABA and L-theanine after dinner to wind down,
1mg (6 drops) of Intelligent melatonin to help initiate sleep
5 htp to support serotonin and prevent awakenings
25mg of CBD (water soluble gel caps) mid-day to keep his nervous system balanced
Kick your "yeah buts" to the curb. It's time to start living the life you desire - whether it's sleep, fitness, relationship, career - you name it, you can do it. Boleh! We are here to support you.
A great message from my friend Hubie at SPIRE Fitness
We are all unique individuals, and we connect differently with movement. The important thing isn't how we are moving, but that we are moving. Going to gym is only one option, and typically the one we default to for "getting in shape". But the truth is, movement comes in many forms. It could be dance, biking, walking, yoga, Zumba or Jujitsu. The sky is the limit. Move more and pretty soon, you'll be โlooking back to see how far you've comeโ in your movement practice.
Over at SPIRE Fitness, movement comes in the form of indoor cycling, rowing and TRX - three incredible and fun ways to get moving. I'm grateful they are here in our community. Check them out if you haven't already.
That's me! In the jungles of Borneo practicing medicine. People often ask me how I ended up there, and then back here in Wisconsin, and how I got into integrated medicine. It's a wild journey and one that I'm beginning to share more and more with you - my dear community.
If you are wondering why as a surgeon, physician and dentist, I travelled and worked in Asia, AND why I returned home and put the scalpe down AND how my spirit guided me, you won't want to miss this...tune into my session with Tricia Reid on the Optimum Health Through Anti-Inflammatory Living Series where I share my story and much more. Sometimes a single word can be powerful medicine.
This post is meant to lift you up, to put a smile on your face, and remind you that everything is okay (and might be better than okay).
Iโve been exposed to many cultures and many different languages, and without any hesitation I exalt Boleh as my very favourite word.
It is a Bahasa Malaysian word meaning: Yes. Can. Sure. Why not? I'm all in. Let's go. Of course. You betcha. Okay. No worries Kawan (Kawan means friend in Malaysia).
Iโve heard most versions of Boleh and they all have one thing in common: 100% of the time, this little word reminds me that itโs okay.
Boleh is what I call Tiny Medicine for my patients. The next time you feel the doubt meter rising, or anxiety and isolation creeping in, remember what my Bahasa-speaking brothers and sisters taught me 10,000 miles from home (see the second photo in this post). We all need a daily attitude calibration. Itโs like a vitamin. You can do it. Say it with me, โBoleh!โ

Oh no! Not all bread is bad?
I recently had the pleasure of meeting Gene Webb, the Owner and Head Baker at North Shore Boulangerie here in Wisconsin. Gene is a master - the guy has a 34 year old sourdough starter from France!
It's pretty common to hear "cut back, or cut out gluten" from health care professionals, but here is the thing, it's not all bad. In fact, I have found that sourdough bread in moderation does my temperamental gut some good. What about you? Share in the comments!
An Israeli study comparing white bread to sourdough bread concluded that it's a highly individualized decision (for the full article: https://www.theatlantic.com/science/archive/2017/06/sourdough-versus-white-bread/529260/).
One thing I know for sure is that the quality of the ingredients in sourdough, like any other food, make a huge difference. And if you want to learn all there is to know about sourdough, stop by North Shore Boulangerie - what better way to do it than supporting a local artisan.

We had fun speaking about everything from my globe-trotting experiences as a surgeon to the healing benefits of integrative medicine - a transition I made from traditional medicine when I started feeling worn down by stress and health troubles.
I also shared my tips on how cleansing your body and tuning in to your intuition will help you deal with things like stress, weight gain and depression.
It's a short listen and a good one! And I'd love to hear what you think, DM me.
