Upland Gunner Awareness Series: The Passing of John Gosselin, Founder & Publisher of the Quarterly Upland Almanac Journal

Idaho has loss an Upland Bird Hunting Media Legend with the passing of John Gosselin, Founder & Publisher of the Quarterly Upland Almanac Journal. John was passionate about upland bird hunting, gun dogs, fine shotguns, upland bird conservation and journalism. John (68) closed his eyes to this life on Wednesday, April 12, 2023 in Boise, Idaho after a long battle with ALS.

John was able to turn his passion for upland game birds, fine shotguns and beautiful hunting dogs into a second career when in 1998 he founded the quarterly publication, The Grouse Point Almanac, which became a few years later The Upland Almanac. As owner/publisher he was able to curate and nurture the Almanac as it became popular with its readership for the celebration of wildlife art that appeared on every cover as much as for the fine writing it contained. John sold the magazine in 2013 but remained publisher until July 2022. In 2023, John’s creation celebrated its 25th year of publication.

A lifelong lover of the outdoors, John was a member, volunteering in various capacities, of several wildlife habitat conservation-oriented groups: The Ruffed Grouse Society, Pheasants Forever, Quail Forever and Idaho Chukar Foundation. In addition to upland bird hunting, which filled his spirit, he enthusiastically shot sporting clays and participated in tournaments in the USA and Canada.

You will be severely missed dear friend!

Upland Gunner Interest Series: Hunt Winter Ptarmigan in Alaska

Great tip on how to keep snow/ice from developing on your gun dog's feet. I spent 2 years in Fairbanks (PGA Director of Golf, North Star Golf Club, May-September) hunting solo both Willow and Rock Ptarmigan. It's sketchy terrain (grizzlies and moose, to say nothing of the remoteness/roughness/bigness) but ptarmigan are not comparable to chukars and Huns or very educated roosters.
