Research Chemist Brian Calderwood had extensive radiation treatment for melanoma tumors on the left side of his chest wall. While necessary to treat his cancer, the unfortunate side effect was a burn that turned into a wound, which limited the use of his left arm. Brian could not do his woodworking, golf or play with his grandchildren like he used to. Thus, Brian sought at Select Physical Therapy to get back to doing what he loves.

Having experienced cancer herself, Physical Therapist Amy Saye conducted Brian's assessment and devised a ReVital Cancer Rehabilitation treatment program with both clinical expertise and empathy for Brian's experience. Amy began working with him to help him to reduce pain and regain shoulder mobility and strength. Brian has been working diligently, both in-center and at home, to reach his physical therapy goals.

"Amy has been fantastic to work with and does a good job of explaining why she has me do various stretches," he said. "The fact the she has been open about her experiences with cancer made me more comfortable."

Brian knew he was on the right track with his small victories. He could reach above his head to get something off the top shelf in the kitchen. He managed tasks at work without asking co-workers for assistance. His oncologist was so impressed with his progress that Brian was released to swing a golf club again.

"I feel great right now," he said. "I feel like I have been given an enormous gift - my shoulder back!"

We are pleased to hear that you are back to doing many things you enjoyed before radiation, Brian. Thank you for choosing us on your rehabilitation journey.

Knee osteoarthritis (OA) slowed Glenda Survant down. Her stage 4 OA is "bone-on-bone" which is degenerative and results in chronic pain and inflammation. For Glenda, she could not walk well and had pain keeping her from a good night's rest as the inflammation persisted. When Glenda fell resulting in an injury on top of the OA, her physician told her it was time for a total knee replacement surgery.

The challenge to the recommended surgery was that it only gave Glenda 10 weeks to recover and prepare to walk and climb for her already scheduled Mediterranean trip. Glenda and the physical therapy team rose to the occasion. Under the care of Physical Therapist Emily Wright, Glenda had set rehabilitation goals and began completing exercises.

"It was hard to trust my new knee in the beginning. I had pain and stiffness after surgery," she said. "Getting out of a chair and walking up and down stairs was difficult."

Glenda, however, made progress every week. Her hard work was paying off as the measurements of her knee/flexion and extension proved. Her personal goal of being able to walk up 80 steps to the top of the Greek Parthenon was within reach.

"Emily was wonderful. She knew how to motivate me toward my goal and did it with a sweet smile," she said. "Even another therapist, Micha, cheered me on."

Glenda met her goals and walked the Parthenon steps. Three months after surgery, she has shared she is back to walking five miles a day and exercising without limitation.

We are so excited to hear about your overseas accomplishments, Glenda. Thank you for choosing us on your rehabilitation journey.

Gail Winner had to receive an emergency partial hip replacement in November after falling alone at home, unable to get up for 27 hours. At 83, Gail still lives an active life, working at DSW, driving and doing Tai Chi. However, this injury caused her to slow down and stopped her from working for more than three months.

This wasn't Gail's first fall or stint with us at our Miami Lakes center, so when she needed rehabilitation again, she knew where to go. This time, she worked with Physical Therapist Catalina Florez, who Gail credits with her success. "Catalina is an angel without wings," Gail said. "She is extremely patient, knowledgable and efficient."

With Catalina's assistance, Gail started walking without her walker, returned to work and is now getting ready to return to Tai Chi.

Thank you for trusting us with your care for the second time, Gail!

But a chance encounter changed everything. Physical Therapist Assistant Rhene Baker happened to teach Darla's fitness class, which led Darla to our Derby center.

Darla's main priorities were returning to walking for pleasure and exercising without pain. Through her customized therapy program, Rhene taught her exercises to alleviate pain and prevent it from returning.

After a few short weeks, Darla said she's now walking pain-free for short distances and looks forward to reaching more goals as her treatment continues.
