This is a special post to honor a person we love and respect who recently passed away.
Ode to a life well lived: Honoring Father Larry Olsewski who passed away on June 3,2024.
Rest in Peace my dear brother in Christ:
We meet people in our life journey that emit so much lightness of being and kindness that you cannot help but be drawn to them. Father Larry was one of those beacons of light.
I first met Father Larry when he came to Viera as a Holy Cross priest way back when over a decade ago. He had a genuine love for his calling, his profession of priesthood and it showed in the way he conducted his Sunday Mass services in St John the Evangelist in Viera. Back then it was a small venue and was being built to become a full Catholic Church in Viera. When we could not attend our local Divine Mercy Catholic Church in Merritt Island, we would try to find another church for Sunday Mass.
It was much later that during his retirement from St John’s that Father Larry started doing cameo appearances in my local Merritt Island Catholic Church of Divine Mercy. I did not know then that God is always watching and providing people in our path as their angels on earth.
I remember approaching him after one Sunday Mass he presided over in Divine Mercy Catholic Church and talking to him about another priest Father Mac who had passed away. Father Mac also had a genuine love for our Catholic faith and he always led his sermon with a joke and I thought that might be Holy Cross tradition. At that time I was not aware that the Holy Cross order helped build Notre Dame Du Lac in South Bend Indiana. It was much later that I would discover the connection.
Father Mac was instrumental in starting the Christ Renews His Parish retreat in Divine Mercy and his passing was a tremendous loss to our community as he had an incredible joie de vivre that I would later find out most Holy Cross priests.
It was as as result of attending Father Mac’s Christ Renews his Parish retreat in Divine Mercy way back in the early 2000's, that I developed the courage to start my small business of A&M Therapy,Inc in 2006. By the grace of God’s Angels on earth.
Father Larry was new to Divine Mercy and I felt an instant connection and he smiled to acknowledge that he knew Father Mac. He genuinely listened.
From this point forward, Father Larry would add jokes at the end of his homily and we would give each other a thumbs up acknowledging his sermon.
Every homily he gave was focused and directed to the topic of the week, what we Catholics call the readings and the gospel.
It was much later on that Father Larry’s impact was felt in our lives when my son started getting interested in choosing a college and Notre Dame du Lac became his final choice.
My wife and I didn’t know anything about Notre Dame and since we did not prepare for a college outside of Florida, I asked Father Larry what his thought was on my son's choice of schools. I prayed for a miracle as the tuition was more than my family could afford.
He immediately answered that Notre Dame is not an easy place to get into as it took only the top students in the world. We prayed about this for months and although he could not impact the decision made by the college, I was grateful for the fact he was praying for us.
Prayers and the grace of God helped my son get in. We discovered how much the Notre Dame tradition would impact our family. We talked about Notre Dame every time we saw Father Larry. He gave me a magazine to give to my son from the Mendoza college of business. I was not aware that my son was gifted enough to make the grade.
The pandemic arrived in 2020 during my son's first year in college and it changed the world.
We could not attend live Sunday mass as it was restricted to virtual masses during the beginning of the pandemic. When things normalized, and Sunday masses came back on, Father Larry was a source of inspiration to our local church as despite his advanced age, he took on more duties to perform
more Masses for our local Divine Mercy Church when it reopened. He was also there when the pain of losing the Divine Mercy school occured during the pandemic.
He also attended to my small business and we helped him recover from his neck and shoulder ailments so that he can go fishing with other retired and active Holy Cross priests. He had a passion for painting and often showed his completed paintings in social media. Father Larry was always gracious and welcoming when we approached him about any family issues.
We would talk about Notre Dame football games throughout the four years that my son attended Notre Dame. He was supportive of the local Notre Dame Club of Melbourne and its efforts to raise awareness of the works that continue to be done by the Holy Cross priests in Notre Dame.
We will miss your presence here on earth Father Larry and I raise a toast to you in heaven above.
The painting below was the last official painting that Father Larry posted on his social media site.
He loved living in Cocoa Beach. It's been an honor to have served you Father Larry and I pray you and your family know how much you have touched our family's life. Go Irish 🍀!
Thanks for being a guiding light for many in our community.

It was cool to meet local artist Sara Peck who is a muralist. Hoping she can provide some summer artist color to our two PT clinics. This is one of her works at River Road Coffee. Do you support local artists?
