All City of Mesquite offices will be closed on Sept. 2 for the Labor Day holiday. Commercial and Residential trash will be picked up, but Residential recycling will not be collected.

Labor Day - Monday, September 2, 2024
All City offices closed.
Mesquite Metro Airport open.
Compost Facility and Convenience Center open.
Recreation Centers will be closed.
Main Library and North Branch Library closed.
Mesquite Animal Shelter closed.
Mesquite Arts Center closed.
Florence Ranch Homestead and Opal Lawrence Historical Park closed.
No Residential recycling collected, but will resume on next scheduled collection day.
Commercial and Residential trash will be collected. Commercial recycling will be collected.

Also, the City Council usually meets on first and third Mondays of the month, but the first Monday in September is Labor Day. So instead, the Council will meet on Tuesday, Sept. 3.

Dallas County Mosquito Lab has notified the City of Mesquite Health division that mosquitos have tested positive for West Nile virus in zip codes 75149, 75150 and 75181.

Initial spray will be on Aug. 29 after 10 p.m. in the following areas:
1. Near Town East and Galloway east to Beltline Road
2. Along Pioneer from Sierra across Cartwright to Valley Creek Park
3. From Newsom Rd. to Faithon P. Lucas along Villa Siete and Creek Crossing

The plan is to spray for two consecutive nights. Spray maps are attached.

Weather factors such as rain and or wind may prohibit treatment of designated areas. If you are outside during the hours that mosquitos are active, please remember to use an effective repellent product.

To help protect yourself from mosquito bites, remember the four Ds:
1. DRAIN standing water on your property so mosquitoes won't breed.
2. Use insect repellant that contains DEET on your clothes.
3. Stay indoors at DUSK and DAWN when mosquitos are most prevalent.
4. DRESS in long sleeves and pants and spray repellant on your clothes.

Storm Debris Update
The regular trash collection schedule has resumed. To date,11,800 tons of brush has been collected.
Residents are reminded to place large brush or bulky items at the front curb no later than 7:30 a.m., and no earlier than 24 hours prior to the scheduled collection day. Bulk trash placed for collection may not exceed eight cubic yards (which should fit into an area measured five feet tall by four feet deep by 11 feet long). Residents should separate large brush from bulky items and not block the sidewalk. Grass, leaves and small brush is collected each Wednesday in the regular collection location. Bagged grass clippings and leaves or brush no larger than two feet wide by two feet high by four feet long, and weighing no more than 50 pounds, will be collected. Large brush is classified as brush more than 50 pounds, or piles larger than two feet wide by two feet high by four feet long.
