Skin picking is a struggle many experience, but it will make your acne and scarring worse. Instead, try my derm-approved tips to help heal the skin and prevent picking in the future.

Collagen supports the elasticity, structure, and hydration of our skin. More collagen = less wrinkles. In theory, collagen powder works to support the production of more collagen in the body, but we would like to see more studies when it comes to its effectiveness and safety. But in general, from what I've seen in patients and in myself, I'm on team collagen!

How can stress impact our skin and what are some ways to mitigate stress?

Stress and rising cortisol levels can cause certain inflammatory skin conditions to flare up such as acne, eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, and hair loss.

I’m a big fan of practicing meditation and gratitude to mitigate stress. Quality sleep, exercise, and spending time with friends and family are helpful as well. SHARE YOUR FAVORITE WAYS to decrease stress!

Should you leave your blackheads alone?

One of the main reasons I recommend people treat their blackheads is because if left alone over time, it can cause scarring on the face.

Watch to the end for my favorite ingredients to help with blackheads!

Hidradenitis is a chronic inflammatory condition consisting of painful cysts on the body. There are many treatment options available such as supplements, antibiotics, biologics, and in-office procedures but also lifestyle factors to consider like diet and exercise, so be sure to watch to the end for all my derm-approved recommendations.

Treating acne and eczema-prone skin together can be tricky, but it's possible! I recommend sticking with gentle products that will support your skin's moisture barrier. Look for ingredients like ceramides, niacinamide, and oat in your cleansers or moisturizers. Hypochlorous acid is often used as anti-inflammatory agent in both eczema and acne. If you have active eczema, avoid ingredients that can be harsh like salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, and retinoids. It might be okay if the eczema is not flaring. Also be sure to talk to your to see if oral medication could be a good option for you.

How can you avoid purging when starting tretinoin for the first time?

Purging is when your skin breaks out when you start using tretinoin. Retinoids work by increasing your skin cell turnover and cleaning out your pores, so flushing out the debris in your pores can cause a breakout in some people. I recommend incorporating other anti-acne ingredients into your skincare routine such as a salicylic acid cleanser or a sulfur based product to help avoid purging.

The fastest way to treat a fever blister (aka herpes simplex infection) is with a prescription medication like valacyclovir (aka Valtrex), but there are a few supplements with data to support that they can potentially prevent a fever blister such as L-lysine or humic acid.

How do you treat stretch marks during pregnancy?

This is not a one size fits all and like I mentioned in the video, genetics also play a big role. And treatments outside of pregnancy are most effective.

Can stress give you grey hair?

When you get a patch or grey or white hair, it's called poliosis. We know it can be caused by genetics or autoimmune diseases, like alopecia areata or vitiligo, as well as even melanoma. We know that stress can trigger autoimmune diseases, so I guess in a way, mental or emotional trauma or stress can indirectly cause a grey or white patch on your scalp. We also know that chronic stress leads to overall greying of the hair.

Whether you're breaking out with acne on the scalp or folliculitis, the treatment is pretty similar in mild to moderate cases. I recommend using a salicylic acid shampoo to help remove excess oil or build up around the follicle. Sodium hypochlorite and tea tree can also be other anti-microbial ingredients to look for in shampoo.

Should you take Viviscal or Nutrafol for hair regrowth?

I am a fan of both, so it will mostly depend on what other supplements you're taking or what your hair loss causes are (low vitamin D? stress?). Both supplements have hydrolyzed marine collagen, so I don't recommend taking Viviscal and Nutrafol together, but they will differ in what vitamins, minerals, botanicals, and amino acids they have. For example, Nutrafol has ingredients more targeted toward stress-related hair loss and inflammation. If you're unsure what may be right for you, be sure to talk with your dermatologist about your hair regrowth goals.

Moles on moles on moles. There lots of types, and most of them are harmless. But because melanoma (cancerous mole) is deadly, we still like to make sure your moles look good. If you ever have questions about a mole, be sure to see your dermatologist.

Hormones can play a big role in our skin. Adult female acne (aka "hormonal acne") typically manifests in the lower part of the face during or around the time of their menstrual cycle, but there are a lot of variations in presentation. Our lifestyle and environment can also have an impact on our hormones and our skin, but there is so much we don't know.

What ingredients should you use to exfoliate dead skin?

As a dermatologist, I recommend using exfoliators in the alpha hydroxy acid family, such as glycolic acid or lactic acid, and a good old retinoid.

03/25/2024

UV damage to your skin is very minimal at night, but fluorescent lights indoors can actually emit varying degress of UV rays. This is one of the reasons we preach wearing sunscreen daily, but people with sun sensitive conditions, like lupus, should be ever more cognizant of this phenomenon.

What's a good skincare routine for oily skin?

I recommend using a gel or foam-based cleanser paired with a lightweight cream or gel-cream moisturizer. Of course, you should wear sunscreen every day, and if you're looking to add an anti-aging component, I recommend using an antioxidant serum like Vitamin C in the morning and a retinoid like adapalene in the evening.

Hydrocolloid patches are here to stay. They were first used for wounds because of their ability to draw in fluid and create a sealed moisture barrier. I don't think hydrocolloid patches work on all forms of acne, but it can be good for a juicy one that is inflamed or if you just want to hide the bump 🤷🏻‍♀️

Does anyone know what this is? When it comes to in-office treatments, make sure you are going to a credentialed person with experience. And make sure they are using a device backed by clinical studies.

Maybe there is something to eating a diet rich in carotenoids and looking more "vibrant". I would just be cautious about supplements that claim to make you more tan.

As a pregnant person, I’m avoiding tretinoin, hydroquinine, and stronger exfoliating acids. When I layer, I try to use my actives first (exfoliating and anti-hyperpigmentation products). My routine changes often (I can’t help it — I love trying new things 😅), but this is what’s currently in the mix! Also, your skincare doesn’t need all these steps or be this expensive. I just happen to be a derm who is REALLY into skincare 😜

40 years ago today my mom said it was the happiest day of her life (despite 30 hours of labor and my apparently big baby head being stuck in the canal for hours). I’m looking forward to that as an official 40-year-old (not the baby head being stuck, but the happiest day part). Baby should be arriving in the next 2-3 weeks! 😄

A nourishing trip for my mom and our growing family. 😌 My mom spends most of her waking hours taking care of my disabled sister. Not only did this trip serve as a chance for her to relax, but as a way for my mom to enjoy my dad’s favorite destination. She always brings a photo of him to every beach trip because she wants to share her experience with him. 🕊️🥹
