The intro class and intermediates will begin right after 6:45 warm-ups.

Please note the obvious, we have three strips not four. They all look out over the Mediterranean but the strip next to the fresco villa is dedicated to Foil. The middle strip focuses on Saber and the strip closes to the tables and chairs- Epee. When the middle strip becomes available, it is dedicated to 15 touch bouts or three 5 touch bouts than surrendered to the next available pair of fencers.
The NOFC will continue to have gear available to use but due to the limited space most of our gear is in storage. Arrangements can be made to meet at the storage location to be fitted or I can bring on a best guess to the club. We will offer hanger storage for gear at the club, no need to take it home but for your glove.

DEAR Fencing Family of the NOFC,
We return to Friday and Monday practice.
Next Monday, Coach John, Amnee and Irv will leave for the Summer Nation Championships in Columbus, Ohio. They will fence throughout the week and will be joined mid week by Devin, Edward and Lucyna. We wish them good luck and lots of fun.
On a more somber but positive note, Coach Cotton will be starting treatment to slow the advance of his bladder cancer. Knowing Ted, I’m sure he will take the more aggressive form of treatments with the best of the oncologist New Orleans has to offer. Like legendary baseball player, Yogi Barra and little know local saber champion said, “It ain’t over till it’s over.” Doc Cotton’s spirits are high and your prayers for him are always welcomed.
See you all on the strip. (On Friday)

Fencers, Friends and Followers,
The 3rd edition of Mozzafiato featuring fencing fashion and Style in New Orleans is out. this is a 94 page picture book which our very own Amnee J. is not just a model but made the cover. Yes, it's had to eat a beignet through a fencing mask, but where there is a will there is a way.
To purchase a copy, go to,;
Mozzafiato Fencing Fencing is a personal passion of mine. When I was younger I used to take lessons at the NOAC on N Rampart. The sport is very much like playing chess, with the constant need to contiue to predict and stay 3 steps ahead of your opponent. Many are unaware that New Orleans was once a major hub for Fenci...
Dear Fencers, Friends and Followers,
First an foremost: DON"T STARE AT THE SUN!!
We are not in the path of totality. At best we will get 80% coverage and things will get dark. Peak but don't stare, it's the same reason we fence with masks, eyes don't grow back, nor do they mend. Also the NOFC does not demand a human sacrifice to bring back the sun. That said, I would avoid Lafayette from noon til 4 today. Granted it's only a rumor.
What's not a rumor is that the new trimester starts on the 11th and will run through mid Aug.
Dues are $385 across the board but we will give a $75 discount to parents who wish to take the intro course with their child.
ALL members must be USA Fencing members. (Your 2024/25 membership is still good until Aug 1.) Beginners, your membership is included with your dues. If by chance you will not be fencing the summer trimester, please bring back your gear. The odds are with the house that you will have out grown your gear by the time the fall trimester starts in Aug.
If you have any questions, contact me or your coach.
All upcoming events are posted on askfred.net. Remember qualifiers are only for members of the Louisiana Division and only for those who will go to the Summer National Championships in Columbus, Ohio, if qualified.
Good Luck, good fencing and always keep your eyes looking forward,

Greetings Fencers, Parents and Friends,
Due to the Saints game, we will have fencing practice on Thursday. I advise a light practice for those who are participating in the CCO this weekend.
Tonight, Coach John and I will be checking all wires, masks, gloves FIE padded Chest protectors and foil and Saber lamees. Each will be stamped for tournament use this weekend. Once stamped, do not wash or remove the marking tape or tournament validation markings. Fencers should check their weapons tonight or Thursday before leaving practice to make sure that they pass both weight and shim tests.
Tomorrow, we will be unrolling and stacking our strips at the Hilton Fitness Center from 12:30 until 5. if we have a few volunteers, we can hang our 25 banners. I would also like to set up the weapons check table so we can ck on Friday as we set up . Friday starting at noon the tournament will be assembled. Strips laid in place, taped and grounded. Scoring boxes and reels placed and all will need to be electrified. Also the bout committee must be set up along with both check in scanners and event monitor station and speakers.
On Sunday around 2pm, all that we put up will come down. As strips are no longer needed they will need to be rolled up and bagged, reels and scoring machines will need to be reboxed. Banner unhung and boxed. Basically, it all disappears for another year.
Parents, with your help, set up and breakdown will be easy and if your children needs service hours, I will freely give them for those who help.
Thank you and good luck and good fencing.

To all our members, friends and fencing enthuisest, I bring the heart breaking news that Chris Trammell died yesterday. His personality, captivating knowledge of saber and humor will be greatly missed.

Next
The 31st Annual Crescent City Open is October 21 and 22 at the Riverside Hilton in New Orleans. OF course we are always begging for help to set up on Friday and breakdown on Sunday.
As you know the CCO is expensive.
LATE FEEs begin Oct 11th at mid night. Please don't procrastinate because it's out of our hands. Administration and registration fees (both non-refundable) are collected by the national platform and they want their late fees. In fact we jump through paperwork hoops not to have the double triple fee imposed until the very last days. Please go to your USA Fencing.org profile and sign up for the regional Crescent City Open
https://member.usafencing.org/details/tournaments/7571
You will need to be a competitive fencer to fence in all regional and national events. If you are an Access member, your bump up to Competitive will be prorated. Of course you don't need to be a member to help us on Friday or Sunday. wink wink.
Thank you all and good luck and good fencing,
2023 Crescent City Open RJCC/ROC - USA Fencing All events will be fenced electrically by current USA Fencing rules. Masks, body cords, GLOVES , LAMES and FIE Foil Chest Protectors will be subject to equipment control. FIE Sabre cuffs are required.

Fencers,
Midnight of the sixth, all fees will double for this Saturday's first event of the 23/24 season. Procrastination is over, sign up. The next LA Division tournament will be the Crescent City Open which makes this 3 Weapon event perfect for kicking off the rust and helping to fine tune for the CCO.
IT's a new askFRED format and you may need to change your profile or at the very least your password but it's not too difficult to navigate. If you have any problems ask you coaches or contact me.
Foilist, this is the divisions only E & U event of the season. You will have an opportunity to fence once or continue as an easy E. Basically after the first round with E rated fencers, a second tournament will be held for just UNrated foilist with the condition that there are a minimum of 6 fencers. Once that event is over it is repeated without the winner of the previous event because they earned an E. and so on it goes until we are kicked out of the room or lack the required amount of foilist to award an E. First round is free, a $10 cash pay in for all other rounds.
You can register and pay for the tournament at Askfred.net or click (copy and paste) below:

Greetings to All La Division Fencers,
The Championships will be hosted at the NOAC in New Orleans, June 10th.
All information is on askfred.net. Registration:

At this time I wish to thank Joe Soto for decades worth of aid and assistance to our division. Not only did he produce a great venue to fence but he taped down the strips before anyone arrived. After 49 years of teaching Joe has retired. He may think he is retiring to catalog his 4300 bottles of rare wines and put the finishing touches to his walk in humidor but I know this is only a sabbatical. In time a school or a rec center will be, unbeknownst to them, hiring a truly great teacher and a master foil instructor. Until that time I wish Joe truly the best.
Fencers, because Christ Episcopal gym is no longer available and we are just getting the green light at the NOAC, the registration dues has been reduced to $25 until the 8th of June. Sign up now because as sure as sun rises in the east, at 12:01 on the 9th, registration will go back to $45 and all weapon fees will double.
Remember, you must be a LOUISIANA Division member of the USA Fencing with a minimum ACCESS level membership if you are going to fence the senior events. Y12 events should have at a minimum Club level USA-F membership.
IF you have any questions, please contact me.
Good luck and good fencing,

Dear Friends,
Paula Hawkins has succumbed to the stoke she suffered last month. When Paula fenced, she was a tenacious saberist. She help introduced para fencing into New Orleans and assisted in the para bout committee at Nationals. Her involvement with the Fencing Foundation was tireless and she was critically involved in the transformation of the Crescent City Open three open weapon format to it's current 30 event ROC/RJCC.
My most sincere condolences to her family.

Friends,
Last Thursday evening Chris told me that Dwight Devine died while on a hick around his home in Washington State.
Dwight was to me, the unrefutable shadow anchor of the New Orleans Fencing Club. My aquaintance with Dwight was only from '98 until 2004 when he and his father relocated to WA after Katrina.
He was an amazing fencer when he fenced with unstoppable stamina. A lesson from Dwight could result in cardio arrest in 5mins or less if he didn't like you. An excellent amorier who encouraged me to learn the trade, my guess is that he wanted me to take over for him at Ben Franklin. He made and maintained Dr.H's wiring plans at Ben Franklin and Ursuline.
Dwight never refused any request I had. He was that type of guy to me. I guess he was even more to those who knew him longer.
As I am told that the blinds that I just hung in my wife's sewing room are crooked and I find myself teasing a smile as I walk away to write this remembrance my thoughts turn to the liturgy of my faith in times of grief...
May the memory of Dwight be as a blessing and those that grieve be comforted in the knowledge that Dwight Devine is in the glory and grace of the Lord. Amen

Greetings fencers, Friends and Fencing Enthusiasts,
Due to the Easter Holidays and Spring Break, the 2023 Summer trimester will start April 21st one week later.
This will also allow our intro class to complete electric trials and choose their go to weapon.
The NOFC will offer it's taste of Olympic fencing an intro class into the basic fundamentals of foil, epee, and saber, starting April 24. Sign up is currently open to all who are interested from the age of 8 up. Class will be held on Monday and Thursday evenings from 6:45 until 8ish and adults with transportation may stay and continue until 9:45.
The fee is $365 per fencer. A 20% parental discount will be offered for all who wish to take the intro class with their child. The fee covers: the class, USA Fencing Club dues, ALL needed fencing gear and a personal fencing glove. All that is required from our beginners is a sense of humor, a willingness to learn and the ability to poke others and be poked. Fencing attire is nothing more than tennis shoes, T-shirt, and sweatpants. The class will run until the 17th of August with lots of repetition so there is time for vacations.
In fact, summer is the best time to start fencing. The classes are a bit more laid back just because it's hot and humid and as a central air hub we often get visitors for a night. Some of our past drop ins were the Norwegian Olympic epee team, The Italian master coach who fenced in his silk pants, $600 leather Moreschi shoe's and club gear, plus all the national stars who pop in as they head to or from the various festivals that are hosted in New Orleans host.
Of course if you have any questions about our intro class, pleas feel free to contact me.
For all club members, intermediate and advanced start times will remain the same. Dues are $365 and lessons with Dr. Cotton will continue at $70 for seven lessons in foil or epee.
Please note that all USA Fencing memberships expire July 31 at which time you must renew in order to continue to fence in the NOFC. Please renew your USA Fencing membership at www.usafencing.org/membership.
If you have any question, please contact me.

Dear Fencers, Parents and Friends,
The NOFC will be closed until Thursday Feb.16 for the Mardi Gras Holiday.
I understand this is upsetting to most who would prefer to push steel than go to parades, celebrate with the Boeuff Gras, or travel to parts unknown. BUT, we will resume on Thursday Feb., 16th. Please note that the fencing schedule is filling out nicely on askfred.net with two events in March.
until the 16th have a very merry Mardi Gras season whever it may take you.
