FRESH FACES // Meet new corps de ballet member, Katya Chernyshev. We were lucky to have Katya as a guest artist in Swan Lake, and are so happy she's joining us this season!

About Katya: "I was born in Pittsburgh, PA where I grew up training at Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre School. I spent summers at The School of American Ballet and Boston Ballet. I attended a boarding high school in New Hampshire to nurture my love for both ballet and academics and I danced with St. Paul's School Ballet Company. After graduating, I joined Boston Ballet’s Post Graduate Program and Milwaukee Ballet’s Second Company!"

Why MCB: "I chose MCB because everyone in the company has been so supportive, hard-working, and welcoming! This has been a dream company of mine since MCB gets to perform all of my dream repertoire, and I am particularly excited for all the Balanchine works we will be performing this season."

Dream role: "I would love to dance in Twyla Tharp’s In the Upper Room, which I know MCB just performed last season. Hopefully, they bring it back soon!"

Why Miami: "I am so excited to get to experience living in the south by the beach! I have lived up north my whole life and am not going to miss the cold. It is so fun to look at all of the new plants and wildlife in this tropical climate because everything is so different from what I’m used to seeing every day!"

Fun fact: "Both of my parents were professional ballet dancers, and both of my sisters also do ballet!"

Welcome to MCB Katya! Give a warm welcome to her in the comments below!

After graduating, I danced with Tulsa Ballet ll and Atlanta Ballet."

Why MCB: "MCB’s repertoire is full of ballets I never got the chance to dance, but always found very fascinating. I also feel inspired by the beautiful dancers here and I look forward to working and performing for our audience."

Dream role: "Some ballets I would love to dance in are “Western Symphony”, “Rubies” in Balanchine’s “Jewels”, Justin Peck’s “Everywhere We Go” and “Who Cares?”

Why Miami: "The sun, the beach, and the over-the-top cultural scene… hearing people speak Spanish everywhere makes me feel at home. There’s no other place like this."

About Lucy: "I am from Connecticut and began training at The School of American Ballet when I was 10 years old in New York City. I graduated from SAB in 2016." Lucy also joined us last season in Swan Lake, so you might have seen her onstage already!

Why MCB: "I love MCB because of the energy the staff and dancers bring to the studios and stage every day. MCB is always striving for better and it’s inspiring to be around such hard-working artists."

Dream role: "I’d love to dance in Balanchine’s Emeralds one day. The music by Faure is so beautiful and moves my soul. Juliet in Romeo and Juliet has always been a dream role for me as well. One day I hope to dance Afternoon of a Faun."

Why Miami: "I am excited to live somewhere with palm trees! Growing up with the seasons in NYC is a very different experience, so I am excited for the beach life."

About SarahAnne: "I’m from New York City and trained at The School of American Ballet for ten years. I then joined Los Angeles Ballet, and after a few seasons started my studies at Duke University. After graduating, I joined Carolina Ballet. This Spring, I had the chance to start with MCB for Ratmansky’s Swan Lake."

Why MCB: "For me, MCB has the perfect combination of innovative artistic vision, a vibrant location in a growing city, and unique repertoire. All of this fosters strong ties to the community, and I appreciate how much of a pillar the company is for those living in South Florida. I can’t wait for Glass Pieces this season!"

Dream role: "I have so many dream roles it’s hard to narrow down! I would say the lead woman in Balanchine’s Square Dance, Emeralds, or Wheeldon’s This Bitter Earth. I would also love to dance Theme and Variations."
