Did you know that an underlying cause of many digestive problems like IBS, Crohn's and UC is dysbiosis? Dysbiosis is an imbalance in your microbiota, or gut bacteria. This can mean you have too little beneficial bacteria in your gut or an overabundance of harmful bacteria. 🦠🦠🦠

The good news is that diet and lifestyle play a HUGE role in this. By minimizing antibiotic usage except when absolutely necessary, increasing fiber intake, decreasing alcohol and processed foods, and managing stress you can significantly improve your microbiota and experience improvement in your GI symptoms. 💃💃💃

Functional gut testing such as the GI MAP test, a comprehensive stool analysis can also be very helpful in identifying dysbiosis and guiding personalized treatment

Don't underestimate the impact of stress on digestion and overall gut health!

Stress impairs digestive enzyme secretion, increases intestinal permeability, increases visceral sensitivity, alters the microbiome, and inhibits intestinal cleanings waves. 😮😮😮

Tip: To get yourself in the ideal parasympathetic mode prior to eating, avoid eating while standing, working, or talking. Put down your phone, sit down, relax and just breathe for at least 30 seconds before digging into your meal. 🥣 🧘😌

People frequently ask me what they should eat to improve their gut symptoms, whether they might be suffering from constipation, diarrhea, pain, bloating, or gas. Often, the same people have brain issues as well, such as fatigue, anxiety, brain fog, headaches, or difficulty sleeping. That's because the connection between the gut and brain is HUGE!

The good news is that there is SO much you can do from a nutritional standpoint to heal your gut and regain optimal digestive AND brain health.

Of course, each person is unique and would benefit from a diet plan personalized to their specific health needs, preferances and tolerances. However, I've included here some foundational foods that the vast majority of people with gut and brain issues benefit from incorporating in their daily diets. Try to see if you can pick at least one choice from each food group every day to start improving your health today!

If 3 or more of these symptoms are screaming your name, you definitely will want to consider getting tested for SIBO, or small intestinal bacterial overgrowth.

SIBO is when bacteria abnormally increases in the small intestine, instead of staying where it belongs in the large intestine.

So many people who come to me have SIBO as an underlying cause of their health complaints and only discover this after YEARS of searching for answers and trying and failing all kinds of diets and meds! Fortunately, SIBO can be naturally treated and reversed through a combination of diet, herbal antimicrobials, and natural prokinetics.
