About Tal Cohen:
Every so often a musician comes along in jazz that stamps his name on the genre. With his new release “Gentle Giants” pianist, composer Tal Cohen does just that. Joined on his new release by Greg Osby on alto saxophone, Jamie Oehlers on tenor saxophone, Robert Hurst on bass, and Nate Winn on drums, Cohen shows why he his musicianship and compositional skills are gaining attention. The new release is a collection of original compositions with a personal dedication to Miles Davis on a performance of “Nardis.” Jump on board and enjoy the brilliance of Tal Cohen.
Tal Cohen's unique piano style owes its roots to the Jewish folk songs and classical music he played in his formative years growing up in Gedera, Israel. Cohen moved to Perth, Australia at the age of 16. He later continued his music studies at the prestigious Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts, where he completed a Bachelor degree, Honors and Master’s degree in Jazz Performance.
Tal began performing nationally in 2010 with his involvement in the successful Australian tour of the Jamie Oehlers Quartet, including shows in Sydney, Melbourne, and Perth. Later the same year he performed with New York saxophonist, George Garzone.
In 2011, Tal performed at the Melbourne Jazz Festival with highly acclaimed New York drummer Ari Hoenig. The group then recorded the album “Smoke and Mirrors,” which was nominated for two Australian National Jazz Awards and won the Australian Rhythm Magazine “Album of the Year” award. In the same year, Tal also had the honor of playing with iconic modern jazz bassist Robert Hurst in Melbourne’s acclaimed jazz club Bennet’s Lane
"Yellow Sticker”, Tal's first album as a leader, was released in December 2011. Consisting largely of original tunes, it showcases some of Australia’s finest musicians with Jamie Oehlers on saxophone, Chris Tarr on drums and Pete Jeavons on bass. The album enjoyed an enthusiastic reception from local audiences and the Australian newspaper gave it an impressive 4-star review. The album has had extensive radio airplay in Australia, Los Angeles, and was also featured in full length on Israeli radio station, Reshet Bet. in October 2012 Tal went on a tour to promote the album, playing shows in Brisbane, Melbourne, and Sydney,
In 2013 Tal performed a number of shows with world-renowned saxophonist Joe Lovano at the inaugural Perth International Jazz Festival, including a sold-out performance at the Perth Concert Hall to a 1,000-large audience. Tal was also honored to present a set of his original music at this highly successful jazz festival. Also in 2013, Tal was chosen to be a semi-finalist in the Wangaratta Jazz Festival’s 2013 piano competition- Australia’s most renowned and fierce jazz competition.
One of the highlights of Tal’s career occurred in 2014 when he received a call from Grammy Award-winning trumpeter and composer Terence Blanchard to play a show with his Quintet at the Grammy Museum in Los Angeles for the Blue note 70th anniversary celebration. Blanchard also invited him to perform with the “Terence Blanchard Quintet” at the 2014 New Orleans Jazz Festival. Later that year, Cohen appeared at the 2014 Perth Jazz Festival alongside acclaimed New York saxophonist Greg Osby.
Also in 2014, Tal Cohen competed in the prestigious Barry Harris National Jazz Piano Competition. After traveling to Detroit, Michigan to compete in the final round, Cohen was named the Grand Prize Winner, receiving first place and gaining an opportunity to perform his music at the Main Stage in the 2014 Detroit Jazz Festival accompanied by bassist Robert Hurst and drummer Nate Winn.
In July, Cohen was named the winner of the exclusive Australian Freedman Fellowship Award. The nomination for this award culminated in a final performance at the Sydney Opera House. As well extensive radio air play, 3 days studio time at the Australian Broadcasting Network and $15000 prize money.
Now based in the US, has become a regular performer with iconic jazz figures such as Terence Blanchard, Greg Osby and Robert Hurst and continues to tour the world performing his unique brand of improvised music.
