This is my most frequently asked question as a speech pathologist.
I have mixed feeling about this question because the number of words a child has is not a full picture of their language development. So keep that in mind.
So what do you do if your child is not saying as many words as they āshouldā? DONāT stress! Talk to an SLP! Learn ways you can help your child learn more words at home.
And if your currently in a situation where your child is in therapy or youāre being intentional in supporting their language development then donāt even look or stress over these numbers because THEY DONāT MATTER! Meet your child where they are and enjoy their journey! These numbers donāt define who they will become or what kind of parent you are ā¤ļø!

Knowing what steps to take next is key!
If your child isnāt imitating gestures and you focus on getting them to imitate words you are skipping a step.
When your child is learning to walk first they roll, then sit, then crawl, then stand, and finally start walking. Itās the same thing with language.
Your child doesnāt go from cooing to saying words overnight. Thereās a step by step process.
Iāll teach you these exact steps inside of Tiny Talkers Academy so that your child can go from no words to talking in full sentences as fast as possible!
You can do this during your everyday routines! No extra time or fancy activities needed!

šš¼Why these words?
Itās simple reallyā¦
These words will help a child get their wants and needs met.
When toddlers arenāt able to express their wants and needs this often times results in a tantrum, hitting, crying, and lots of frustration.
Sure, I expose my kids to a variety of words like ācowā and āballā, but I focus on words that will help get those needs met.
I dive a little deeper into this topic in my free masterclass.

Little one working on their language milestones??
šš¼Letās do it together!
šš¼Hi there, Iām Brenda!
As a mom and speech pathologist, Iāve combined love, science, and a whole lot of fun to help you get your little one talking in ways that fit right into your busy life. šāØ
I was a mom before I was an SLP. I remember I used to drill my oldest daughter with flashcards, desperately trying to get her to learn new words.
š“It was boring for her and exhausting for me. Talk about a lot of work for not a lot of gain.
After becoming an SLP I had 3 more daughters. And letās say things went way differently. By the age of 2, all three of them were using 6 word sentences to communicate.
I coached parents on these strategies in private sessions. As I watched more and more families experience success using these strategies I created Tiny Talkers Speech.Ā
I created Tiny Talkers Speech because I want YOU to experience the same results.
Dive into our Tiny Talkers family and learn just how easy it can be to support your childās language development.

āConstantly asking our kids questions can make them feel like they are being quizzed, can take the fun out of playing, and doesnāt teach them anything.

š¬I know we talk often about how many words a child has but communication is more than words!
Communication also consist of eye contact, joint attention, and gestures!
šš½If your child is not yet using words it is important to be aware of their nonverbal communication such as gestures and you will notice that your child is in fact communicating!

šš¼Make sure youāre doing this when teaching your child sign!šš¼
Teaching your baby or toddler sign will NOT cause language delay.
In fact, research has shown that using sign language actually increases a childās verbal skills.
When teaching your baby sign, make sure to always pair the sign with the verbal word and always use the word in the correct context!

Letās admit it, we all do it! When we want our child to say a word we tell them āSay _____!ā in an effort to get them to imitate the word!
āØWhatās the big deal with using the word āsayā? Telling your child to say something puts pressure on them to talk and may cause them not to talk.
āØLetās say you want your child to say āshoeā while getting dressed:
š
š½āāļøINSTEAD OF telling your child āSay shoe!ā
šš½Repeat and model the word āshoeā 3-5 times with pauses in between while putting on their shoe.
āØI know itās difficult to avoid the word āsayā! It definitely was for me!
āØIs this something you struggle with?
