On July 8, 1986 at 4:25 pm, a southbound Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Company (B&O) freight train derailed near Bear Creek in Miamisburg, Ohio. One of the cars was loaded with phosphorous and was damaged during the derailment which led to the cargo being ignited and creating a large amount hazardous smoke.
Mound Laboratory helped with this emergency by using ARAC (Atmosphere Release Advisory Capability) to track the cloud of smoke, having MARA (Monsanto Amateur Radio Association) keep the lines of communication open, donating field equipment like 30 gallon drums, and giving scientific advice as needed.
Chuck Friedman, Mound's Environment Manager at the time, said "It is our social responsibility as a company in the community to offer help. . . we can offer technical and scientific expertise as well as needed equipment on the scene."
Thousands of people were evacuated, including all of Miamisburg and parts of West Carrolton, Moraine Miami Twp., Germantown, German Twp. and Washington Twp.
It took five days to put the fire out. Local hospitals reported they treated over 400 cases of shortness of breath, irritated eyes, and/or sore throats from the fire.

In honor of the first day of summer, we're looking at some of the posters students have created while participating in our Art at Arms Lesson!
Our Art at Arms Lesson merges history and art! Students discuss propaganda images in the form of posters and political cartoons by looking at examples from WWI to the Cold War and images produced and seen around Mound Lab. Students will compare and contrast propaganda artwork from both the United States and the Soviet Union before making their own images.
These pictures were created by students in Grades 5th - 12th.

On Jan. 1, 1863, President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, which declared freedom for Americans enslaved in states that had seceded from the Union. However, word did not reach some communities until months or years later.
Juneteenth commemorates the day when the last Americans enslaved by the Confederacy learned from Union forces of their freedom on June 19, 1865, in Galveston, Texas.

Our History
After WWII, Mound Laboratory was constructed as the first Atomic Energy Commission site in Miamisburg, Ohio, to continue and consolidate Dayton’s work within the Manhattan Project that produced the world’s first atomic bombs. The Dayton Project purified polonium-210 for use in polonium-based initiators, also known as “urchin” initiators, or triggers. Mound operated from 1948-2003 as an integrated research, development and production laboratory that supported U.S. nuclear weapons, energy and space programs. In 1954, the radioisotope thermoelectric generator, also known as RTG or nuclear battery, was invented at Mound. This invention continues to propel mankind into the depths of space by powering spacecraft such as Cassini, Voyager I & II, Galileo, Ulysses, Pioneer, New Horizons, and many more. Mound RTGs also powered the EASEP and ALSEP packages left on the moon for Apollo missions 11, 12 and 14-17. Advancement in tritium (hydrogen-3) technology, containment and reuse was yet another long-time Mound mission, supporting hydrogen nuclear weapons systems, metal hydride research and development, and the reduction of tritium emissions. Mound’s missions ended by 2003, when all Department of Energy work left the site, but it’s legacy and contributions continue.
The Discovery Center reveals the top secret history of Mound, its employees and their significant contributions to national security during the tense years of the Cold War, the Nuclear Age and the Space Race. Managed and operated by Dayton History, the Discovery Center offers a fresh look at yet another aspect of the region’s rich history of innovation in order to inspire generations by connecting them with the unique people, places, and events that changed the Dayton region and the world.
