The passing of country music legend Toby Keith is saddening but creates a moment to pause and reflect on one night in La Porte County not long ago.

The famous country music star had been scheduled to perform at the LAPORTE COUNTY FAIR several months prior. The Administration was acutely aware of the sellout crowd Mr. Keith was going to draw, along with an increased amount of traffic. As a result, additional event security was added for the evening.

That day information was received Mr. Keith would be arriving at the LaPorte Municipal Airport a short time before his show was to begin. Prior to his scheduled arrival time of 5:15 PM, Captain Derek Allen and Sergeant (now Captain) Andrew Hahn made their way to the airport to provide an es**rt for Mr. Keith. While standing by, Mr. Keith’s personal protection detail interacted with the deputies, met K-9 Miko, and played ball with the four-legged crime fighter on the tarmac.

At 5:13 PM, a white and red private jet suddenly appeared over the tops of the trees southwest of the airport. The jet touched down and taxied to an area near the awaiting vehicles. The tall and famous legend, along with his faithful K-9 in tow, appeared and made their way down the aircraft steps. As he entered an awaiting vehicle, the deputies presented Mr. Keith with some agency gifts on behalf of former Sheriff John T. Boyd.

The deputies made quick work of the 2-mile es**rt to the fairgrounds where Mr. Keith remained inside a tour bus until his show was scheduled to begin at 8:00 PM.

Prior to the beginning of the concert, deputies assigned to the stage area learned Mr. Keith would be inviting a veteran on stage near the end of the performance. Along with that, deputies advised Mr. Keith’s personal protection detail that it was the final shift for one deputy, Gary Biggs, who would be retiring at the conclusion of the concert. Little did anyone know what would unfold later that evening.

As expected, Mr. Keith delivered a performance to remember. Prior to the conclusion and just before his famous rendition of “Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue (The Angry American), Mr. Keith motioned to a veteran he had identified in the crowd and to Deputy Biggs who had flanked “stage right” throughout the evening. The veteran and Deputy Biggs were waved over to an area near the center of the stage where Mr. Keith performed the hit song. At one point Mr. Keith walked over to the veteran and Deputy Biggs where he shared some personal thoughts, thanks, and embraced these two gentlemen.

Following the concert, Mr. Keith was es**rted back to his awaiting aircraft where he departed some six hours later after arriving on our soil.

Mr. Keith and his music has touched millions, including countless numbers of service members defending our freedoms while being deployed around the globe.

A true legend and patriot; Rest in Peace, Toby. 🇺🇸
