Old Age and Exercise

According to Familydoctor.org., it is safe for most adults older than 65 years of age to exercise. Even patients who have chronic illnesses can exercise safely. These include heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, and arthritis. In fact, many of these conditions are improved with exercise. If you are not sure if exercise is safe for you or if you are currently inactive, ask your doctor.

Health Benefits of Music Therapy for Older Adults

The field of music therapy has grown tremendously in the past century. It's now being offered in schools, community centers, and assisted living centers. Chores Can Help

Seniors who stay at home every day can do away with boredom by doing different physical activities, such as household chores, cooking and baking, and gardening. However, if mobility is an issue, home care services are recommended.

Home Care Nurtures Dignity

Seniors may easily feel sadness, boredom, loneliness, and pain. All of these things can then lead to the feeling of losing one’s dignity. They may think that they can no longer do things on their own and they have no more purpose. But with the right home care services, dignity can be regained, maintained, and nurtured. Caregivers can help seniors regain their confidence and self-esteem by giving them the respect that they deserve. Don’t settle for less when it comes to home care.

Comfy Clothes for Seniors

Seniors may easily feel uncomfortable because of the physiological changes their bodies undergo. Help them by making them wear loose-fitting, comfortable, and easy-to-use clothing such as clothes with elastic waistbands or fabric fasteners.

Fostering Good Communication

Communication can be difficult for people with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias because of memory trouble. They may also easily be agitated and anxious. In some types of dementia, language abilities are affected, and trouble finding the right words may be apparent. However, good communication with a person suffering from dementia can still be possible. Just be sure to speak calmly, respect the person’s personal space, and remind the person who you are while encouraging a two-way conversation for as long as possible.

Everyday Care for Dementia

Since dementia involves memory, thinking, and behavioral changes in older adults, it is important to help people with dementia keep a healthy daily routine. Guide them as they go about their day and assist them in bathing, dressing, and eating.

Modifying Your Home

To help your senior loved ones live safely at home and make the most of aging, you have to provide them with a safe environment. Consider their physical limitations and the possibility of injuries from doing simple tasks. Install handrails on walls, especially in bathrooms, get rid of slippery rugs or mats, and avoid the buildup of clutter. Installing good lighting at home also helps seniors with poor eyesight.

Assessing Seniors’ Mobility

Seniors may need canes, walkers, rollators, knee scooters, or wheelchairs. But how can we know if they already require these assistive devices at home? To properly assess a senior’s mobility, ask them the following questions:

- How well can you walk?

- Can you climb up and down the stairs?

- Can you get in and out of bed by yourself?

- Can you sit and get out of a chair by yourself?

If they answered ‘no’ to any of the above, they might need assistive devices.
