STOP THE INTAKE!
Pay attention to what you are ingesting in the hours before sleep.
Did you know…ingesting caffeine within FIVE to SIX HOURS of sleep could be disrupting of sleep cycles. SIX HOURS! That means….if we are looking at a normal bedtime of 10pm, you should not have anything with caffeine after 4pm. Take note for your own personal results! You could need to increase that to 8 or 10 hours, OR, you could be fine having some caffeine 2 hours prior to sleep. BUT….if you are struggling with insomnia….look at your caffeine patterns and consider making adjustments.
Additionally….eating a meal too close to bedtime can contribute to insomnia. Research has shown that eating too close to bedtime can lead to a decrease in sleep quality. Not only can a heavy meal close to bedtime prolong wakefulness making it hard to fall asleep, it can cause a person to wake intermittently during the n night. Eating close to bedtime can also precipitate acid reflux/ heart burn in some individuals. It is recommended to not eat within 3 hours of bedtime.
If a persona battles low blood sugar levels at night, requiring a later nutritional booster, consider eating a small handful of nuts, drinking a glass of milk, or eating a kiwi. These are all found to help promote sleep, as well as stabilize blood sugars.
If you are eating meals close to bedtime, and/ or enjoying a cup of coffee at night without insomnia issues….then by all means….carry on! But for most, stopping the caffeine and meal intake several hours before a desired bedtime can have positive impact on sleep patterns and insomnia.
Mental health! It can be so illusive. 😫
We can have weeks of thriving. Months of “doing great”! Years of stability. 😁
Then, things can shift….sometimes with what seems like absolutely no notice. The mornings become harder. The mood becomes heavier. The anxiety seems to be more palpable.🥺😢
The pendulum swings in both directions and that is normal! COMPLETELY normal!
What if we allowed ourselves to just BE in the moment, whatever that moment is? What if we allowed ourselves to just sit in the various fluxes of mood, observe, and feel.
Today, let yourself acknowledge where you truly are on the pendulum swing. Let yourself feel this moment, this season. Take notice of whether these feelings are fleeting or have been around for awhile. Don’t feel pressure to shift the pendulum today. Just be in it!
Emotions are meant to be felt. They are meant to be explored and noticed.
Be in them! It’s OK!
TURN IT OFF!!!
This is a HUGE problem in our society today, and one of, if not THE MOST damaging to regular sleep cycles. Everyone….stop taking your phones to your bedroom. Stop scrolling in bed. Stop watching TV in bed. Turn them OFF!!! 🛑
According to “Say Good Night to Insomnia”, by Gregg Jacobs, PH.D., “the bedroom 🛏️ should only be used for sleep and sexual activity. Do not use the bedroom for watching television, work, study, or using the telephone”.
It is well known that the screens of electronic devices such as smartphones, computers, tablets, and televisions can emit blue light that disrupts our natural sleep cycles. Decreasing exposure to light in the evening, and blue light in particular, is an important way to help your body naturally prepare for sleep and get quality rest.
I know this concept is so very difficult. We are glued to our devices!! 🙋🏻♀️ GUILTY!
Make a conscious decision to do this for yourself. Your mental health, thus your physical health, will thank you.
⭐️ Set an alarm to turn off electronic devices at least 1 hour prior to going to bed (ideally 2-3 hours). If you have trouble making yourself do this, consider downloading an app (I know…irony)….that blocks your apps an hour before your bedtime.
⭐️ Then, if you want to read from your phone, dim the brightness of your electronic screens, or use the “night mode” feature found on some devices.
⭐️ Consider changing your home lighting to dim lamps, or even lamps that emit colors other than blue such as red or orange.
Take a-way! Make it a priority to TURN IT OFF!! You can do it. It make take practice, but I promise, you will be glad you did!
Good afternoon and welcome to a new week!
As you approach this new week, I challenge you to see it with fresh eyes. Explore the mundane around you and look for something new. ❤️
Be present in your interactions and notice those who need your warmth and smile. 😁
Let your head be up and your eyes be wide open.
Make a note each night of the things you noticed afresh this week and let it fill your soul with hope!
⭐️MEET OUR RECEPTIONIST, EMILY⭐️
Emily is our awesome receptionist that is the front face of our clinic. She grew up here in Midland, graduate from high school 2020. She has been working as a receptionist here for over 6 months, and was at another mental health office prior to join our staff making her an EXPERT😁 in helping others seeking mental health care.
She enjoys the vibe of the clinic….stating “it’s nice and calm”. ❤️ She loves working with the people we see every day, as well as the great practitioners were have here in the clinic. She has been a major asset to our clinic with her sweet, caring smile and personality making people feel comfortable right from the start!
Sleep!!! A primary pillar for optimizing mental health!! It’s a must….truly. It is one of my primary questions and areas of concern for folks coming to my clinic. We address it day 1!
How much sleep are YOU getting each night?? How’s your sleep hygiene????
⭐️Build around a regular rising time!⭐️
This is an important piece to sleep cycle building!
According to “Say Good Night to Insomnia”, by Gregg Jacobs, PH.D., “establishing a regular rising time will help you fall asleep more easily, sleep more deeply, and wake up less often and or for shorter periods of time. You will also improve your sleep efficiency, make the bed a stronger cue for sleep and sleep even better as a result”.😊
It is not uncommon for this suffering from sleep issues to “make up for lost sleep” but sleeping in or napping during the day. This tactic can actually CONTRIBUTE to insomnia in the long run.😴😴😴🥱🥱
Again from the great book “Say Good Night to Insomnia”, the author explains “body temperature rhythm starts to rise in the morning when we get out of bed, become active, and allow sunlight to enter our eyes. If you sleep later on weekends or after a bad night of sleep, you delay the rise in your body-temperature rhythm because you delay physical activity and exposure to sunlight”. 🌤️
This delay will offset your whole body temperature rhythm making it harder to fall asleep at night.
TIPS:
1. Determine your desired rising time ⏰
2. Plan enjoyable activities early in the morning every day such as reading, exercising, getting in a more walk, or mindfulness activities such as meditation and journaling. 📚 🚶 🧘🏻♀️
3. Track your sleep consistency of your rise time and its impact on your overall sleep habits. 📝
