Helping VA Veterans with pain relief, stress, high blood pressure, balance, sleep and so much more through Tai Chi/Relaxation Therapies in the community care program has been so meaningful to me. Today, I just worked with one Veteran on a new relaxation approach for low back pain, and he smiled at me at the end and said, “That was a very wonderful experience, You are GOOD.” I told him, he is the one doing the practice and creating the change and it is an honor to be his guide.

Happy Thanksgiving🍁

AS IF TO DEMONSTRATE AN ECLIPSE

I pick an orange from a wicker basket
and place it on the table
to represent the sun.
Then down at the other end
a blue and white marble
becomes the earth
and nearby I lay the little moon of an aspirin.
I get a glass from a cabinet,
open a bottle of wine,
then I sit in a ladder-back chair,
a benevolent god presiding
over a miniature creation myth,
and I begin to sing
a homemade canticle of thanks
for this perfect little arrangement,
for not making the earth too hot or cold
not making it spin too fast or slow
so that the grove of orange trees
and the owl become possible,
not to mention the rolling wave,
the play of clouds, geese in flight,
and the Z of lightning on a dark lake.
Then I fill my glass again
and give thanks for the trout,
the oak, and the yellow feather,
singing the room full of shadows,
as sun and earth and moon
circle one another in their impeccable orbits
and I get more and more cockeyed with gratitude.

Today, a new participant joined in my local movement group. A thirty-something mom of five shared afterward how she loved the way in our practice there are no right or wrong ways to do moves as long as they feel good for the body. She also shared how wonderfully it felt to share the energy of love with everyone during our Heart Opening ending moves. She usually does not like “group exercise” classes, but found the movements simple but a good challenge and could tell how they helped her body to open and relax. Yep, I never imagined Tai Chi would become such a major practice for me and how much joy it is to share it with others.

I concur!!! Each time I practice Tai Chi with one or more Veterans, I receive something valuable. Sometimes it is a new ability I feel in my body, sometimes it is a deeper sense of relaxation, it could be feeling more alive and positive. Tai Chi is a gift that keeps giving and every Veteran receiving Community Care with me that comes at least once a week agrees that it makes life in their body feel better.

Have I mentioned I love my work? Part of being a somatic movement educator assisting others with healing and conditioning is learning and embodiment of new movement skills, techniques, and principles within myself FIRST. There are many behind the scenes hours of joyful and awe filled practice and learning before I share with participants in person or online. A glimpse into my Nia Teachers meeting today. I took several pages of notes, but the following words really stood out to me as we were discussing the newest routine, "Treasure." When you read the words, what do you notice in your body? Remember your body and life are the greatest TREASUREs and there is so much to enjoy during your unique exploration!

What keeps me going in my integrative wellness practice after over 20 years? I love being with people when they emerge into the awareness and awe of a new state of healing and wellness. I am still a child at heart and love to move, play, listen to music, connect with others and create with unlimited potential. I am incredibly grateful for the opportunities I have had to study and practice such diverse and effective mind/body integrative tools I share with my clients. Usually clients say I am a magician and credit me with some other worldly powers, and I smile (I love the magician archetype) and remind them they were open and inviting change in themselves too.
