Dear members of the Marquette community:

It is with deep sadness that we write to share the difficult news that Marquette University President Michael R. Lovell passed away today following a three-year battle with sarcoma, a rare form of cancer.

Together, we pray for President Lovell’s family, especially his wife Amy, his children, and his friends, as well as for all members of our Marquette and Milwaukee communities, as we grieve this immeasurable loss.

President Lovell and Amy were in Rome with members of the Society of Jesus and the Board of Trustees on a Jesuit formation pilgrimage when President Lovell fell ill and was taken to a hospital in Rome.

President Lovell’s decade of leadership at Marquette was marked by a deep commitment to innovation, entrepreneurship, and community renewal and development — consistent with the university’s Catholic, Jesuit mission that animated him. An entrepreneur at heart, President Lovell pushed Marquette and Milwaukee to ask what could be rather than settling for the status quo. Throughout his presidency, he attended hundreds of campus events each year and continued to teach undergraduate students in his product realization class, saying that he gained great energy from his interactions with students, faculty and staff.

A fixture of the Milwaukee community, President Lovell served on multiple local boards and national higher ed consortiums, where his peers valued his collaborative spirit, humility and ability to advance complex ideas. Together, President Lovell and Amy were trailblazers in directly addressing our region’s mental health issues. His contributions to Marquette will be remembered forever, just as his loss echoes throughout our community.

Support and resources are available for the campus community through Campus Ministry, the Faber Center, the Counseling Center and the Employee Assistance Program, which is available 24/7. A campus prayer vigil is being planned and funeral arrangements will be shared in Marquette Today when they are available.

The days ahead will be full of heartbreak. In this time of grief and sadness, let us come together as a community linked by faith and love.

Sincerely,

Todd Adams
Chair, Marquette University Board of Trustees

Dr. Kimo Ah Yun
Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs

Prayer for Community Loss

God of Wisdom,
We are grieving beyond measure
and struggling to make sense of such a profound loss
for parents, friends, and the entire Marquette community.
We commend to you our hurt and unknowing,
trusting in your all-embracing love.

Bring us into the hope and light of your Son’s resurrection.
Help us to rely on you, as we support one another in these difficult days,
and keep us ever mindful that you are near – to love and comfort all who mourn.
All of this we pray in the name of Jesus, who lives and reigns forever and ever.

Amen

It’s week two for our nursing students in Peru!

This week, they visited a community marketplace and saw fog catchers harvesting water in arid parts of the country. They also popped by a nursing college in Lima and went to a Peruvian history museum.

At the end of the week, the students traveled from Lima to Iquitos, a city in Amazon Rainforest. That's where we'll find them for next week's update!

We came together today to celebrate three incredible alumni award winners: Mary Astor Gomez Kelsey Schmitt and Dr. Mary Ouimet.

All three have embodied the five qualities of a Marquette Nurse and made tremendous contributions to our college community, their own organizations and the profession at large. Their impact on patients, co-workers, friends and family were evident at the ceremony. They are some of the best that Marquette Nursing has to offer.

Thank you to all who attended today's breakfast and, of course, thank you to all of our alumni; their support allows us to continue educating the nurse leaders of tomorrow.

Vamos a Peru!

A group of five Marquette nursing students are studying abroad in Lima! This week, they explored the city, visited community kitchens and talked to students at Universidad Antonio Ruiz de Montoya.

Over the course of their visit, students will explore the broad range of challenges that impact the well-being of the local community, with a specific focus on health disparities.

It was great to see all the 2024 enrollees in the nursing Ph.D. program together for the annual Ph.D. Intensive Workshop.

Over three days, program participants toured campus, learned about grants and funding for dissertation research, learned about incorporating DEI into research and completed Strengths Finder evaluations, among other things.

We extend a special thanks to Dr. Kristin Ashford from University of Kentucky College of Nursing for her keynote address, "Charting a Career of Impact: Navigating the Intersection of Academia and Policy," which gave our students a lot of great insight into how to best position their work for lasting organizational and societal impact.

Both of the commencement speakers at Saturday's Graduate Commencement are Marquette Nursing graduates.

Children's Wisconsin CEO Peggy Troy spoke to the graduating class about servant leadership and leading with purpose.

"You’ve had the privilege to attend this fine institution, expanding your knowledge, your view of the world, and your potential to make a positive impact on all those around you. You have the tools that you need to succeed."

Student speaker Paula Winiarski, a doctoral graduate and three-time Marquette alumna, spoke about being an ICU nurse in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic and how that experience shaped her journey.

"Remember that sometimes, the toughest of seasons will bring out more grit and character in you than you could ever imagine.”

We're proud of the examples that both of these Marquette Nurses set every single day.
