✈️ WAM's registrar visited NYC last week and spotted a familiar face! Currently on view at MoMA is a 1934 lithograph by Käthe Kollwitz titled "Self-Portrait". The piece at MoMA is one of an edition of 80, but did you know that WAM's collection includes a proof of this same work made outside of the edition? Small world! 🌎

READ MORE:
After more than a dozen years of work, “Out of the Picture” a feature-length documentary film about art critics, is about to be unveiled in the city where it was made during the opening weekend of the Milwaukee Film Festival. The film follows five remarkable, change-making writers living through a period of historic change for art and media.

At a time when media is being decimated, "Out of the Picture" is a hopeful film that promises to inspire the next generation of critics. Two of the film's subjects Carolina Miranda, formerly of the Los Angeles Times, and Hrag Vartanian, of Hyperallergic, will be present with director Mary Louise Schumacher for the Milwaukee premiere, on Friday, April 12, 5pm, at the Oriental Theatre.

The documentary explores the work and lives of Miranda and Vartanian, as well as Jen Graves (The Stranger), Jenee Osterheldt (The Boston Globe), and Seph Rodney, an independent critic. It also features some of the art world’s most prominent and insightful voices, such as artists Catherine Opie and Barbara Earl Thomas; author Sarah Thornton; and decorated critics Roberta Smith (The New York Times) and Jerry Saltz (New York Magazine).

Because the film’s story is rooted in Milwaukee, many of the artists Schumacher wrote about during her tenure as a critic at the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel are part of the texture of the film – including Della Wells, Tyanna Buie, Michelle Grabner, Valaria Tatera and many others.

This week Five years ago, WAM opened their first collaborative exhibition, "On Belonging." Featuring Milwaukee based artists, Lois Bielefeld and Nirmal Raja, "On Belonging" opened a dialogue on identity and place through work in a photo, video, and live performance.

⏮️ Two Years Ago...

This week two years ago, WAM opened "The Secret Garden" exhibition. While it certainly felt like spring this week, at this exhibits' opening, visitors had to make their way through 1-3 inches of snow and single digit temperatures! 🥶

The Warehouse Art Museum Will Move to a New Location - Milwaukee Magazine 01/26/2024

The Warehouse Art Museum Will Move to a New Location - Milwaukee Magazine The museum is temporarily closed through 2024 as staff prepares to open the new facility.

01/26/2024

Dear Friends of WAM,

Our staff is excited to finally announce that the Warehouse Art Museum is moving! 🚚

As stated by John Shannon, managing director and co-founder, “Jan Serr and I have wanted to make this move for the last year or more. We’ve now made a firm decision to do so. We wanted to share this decision with you now.”

Plans for this new location include expanding our gallery space, providing visitors with both permanent and rotating exhibitions, new research services for students and scholars, and extended hours of operation to provide greater public access to WAM’s collection in the future.

As many of you know, in December of 2023, after the conclusion of our fall exhibition, PAUSE/CONNECT, WAM temporarily closed its doors to the public. The museum will remain closed to the public until further notice as our staff prepares to open the new facility in 2025.

During this temporary closure, WAM is committed to remaining active in the Milwaukee community, with plans for several events around the city in the coming months.

Details about the new facility and opening plan will be unveiled at a later date. As always, more information about the Warehouse Art Museum and special events can be found at WAMmke.org.

See You Again Soon! 🙋

Do you remember 2022's Secret Garden Exhibition? WAM is looking to find this iconic gate a new home!

While it can't stay at WAM any longer, we are looking to donate this structure with it's iconic mural by Emma Daisy to someone who can care for it.

We encourage interested parties to contact WAM for sizing, transportation, and care details. We're hoping to find it a new home before 2023 comes to an end.

The Warehouse

The Warehouse will re-open Monday, June 22, 2020.

Visitors must call 414-252-0677 to make a reservation to visit.

The Warehouse is a 4,000 SF exhibition space on the ground floor of a large five-story former factory and warehouse built in 1924 in Milwaukee's Design District. LED lighting and display walls have been added to the renovated space, which retains elements of the building’s industrial past, such as concrete columns and floors. The Warehouse mounts curated exhibits of artists from its permanent collection and other sources.

The permanent collection consists of 3,500+ late 19th and 20th century works on paper, paintings, photography, and sculpture. Works on paper include artists such as Jim Dine, Helen Frankenthaler, David Hockney, Henri Matisse, and Robert Rauschenberg. Photographs in the collection include works by Helen Levitt, Sally Mann, and Cindy Sherman. Built by private collectors Jan Serr and John Shannon, the collection is personal and based on their interests and experiences. Both residents of Wisconsin, Serr and Shannon include many notable Wisconsin artists in the collection including Warrington Colescott, John C**t, Ruth Grotenrath, and Schomer Lichtner. Their travels brought together works by contemporary Japanese, Mexican, and Indian artists. These concentrations include Anish Kapoor, Tsukioka Kogyo, and Diego Rivera.
