🎨 ✨Join us in welcoming artist Melissa Dorn as Villa Artist-in-Residence. Melissa Dorn (Anchorage, Alaska, 1967) is a Milwaukee artist obsessed with industrial mop heads, feminism, and labor. Her sculpture, paintings, and installations, directly and indirectly, utilize craft, pulling at threads of her history, "Midwestern-ness," and the everyday.

You may remember Dorn's "Fem-utility Closet" (pictured below) from "The Sarah Ball Allis Art Museum" exhibition at Charles Allis Art Museum in 2023. The immersive installation in Sarah's former ensuite was one of the highlights of the show.

Dorn earned a BFA from the Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design and has shown work regionally and nationally, including at Art + Literature Lab (Madison, WI) and Louise Hopkins Underwood Center for the Arts (Lubbock, TX). Previous residencies include Sam & Adele Golden Foundation for the Arts Residency (2019) and Vermont Studio Center (2014).

The Museum looks forward to presenting a solo exhibition of Dorn's work at the conclusion of her residency in early 2025.

✨Join us for a Plain Weaving Workshop at Villa Terrace Art Museum on August 15th from 6:00- 8:00 pm. This workshop asks people of all ages to come together for a guided workshop on plain weaving. Plain weaving is the process of the over-and-under passing of treads to create a criss-cross pattern.

Mira Dahms, a 2024 Villa Terrace curatorial intern, will lead the step-by-step workshop. Dahms is a student at UW-Madison studying Art History and has a passion for arts and crafts.

🧶A brief history of weaving:
The history of weaving is one that women largely dominate. Women from all over the world from many different cultures created useful and decorative objects through masterful weaving. A practice that transitioned from branches, twigs, and plant fibers to wool, cotton, and acrylic, weaving is a craft that is enjoyed by many.
Recommended for ages 12 and up.

Dear Museum Friend,

We need your help. The Charles Allis Art Museum and Villa Terrace are proud to be part of the fabric of Milwaukee County. Since 2012, CAVT Museums, Inc. has stewarded the Charles Allis and Villa Terrace Art Museum on behalf of Milwaukee County—maintaining these beautiful historic landmarks, providing public programming, hosting private events, and ensuring public access to these noteworthy collections.

For decades we have helped make priceless memories with you and your families from childhood afternoons when the Allis was Milwaukee's first children's library to marriage vows in our gardens.

As its budgeting crisis deepens, Milwaukee County is parting ways with arts and culture institutions and is considering different futures for our beloved museums. Help us save them by sharing your favorite Museum memories with us with the hashtag . Or submit a story at bit.ly/MyCAVTStory. Share or submit your story by July 15 to be entered in to win a gift certificate to our stores.

💥 OPENING RECEPTION: "We Are Reflections: Celeste Contreras Skierski" is a solo exhibition of new works by Celeste Contreras Skierski .arte produced during her artist residency at Villa Terrace Art Museum.

➡ RSVP Link in Bio: Please join us for an opening reception with the artist on June 26 at 6 p.m. A bar and food truck will be onsite serving fresh drinks and food.

🔥 Celeste Contreras Skierski is a Milwaukee-based Xicana artist who works in mixed media to share stories of ceremony, palimpsests, and memory with reflections of identity. She is a graduate and new professor at UW-Milwaukee Peck School of the Arts and manages Studio Tlacuilo + Library, a new artist's book library presenting works by Tlacuilo creatives at House of Rad in the Riverwest neighborhood.

Contreras Skierski's art is not just a product of her creativity but a reflection of her spiritual existence and practice. Over twenty-four weeks as Villa Artist-in-Residence, she carved and stamped a rubber stamp each day, contemplating our time in a world torn by war and turmoil. Her practice is a testament to the universal Indigenous philosophy of 'We are Reflections of Each Other,' a belief in our interconnectedness as mirrors of one another.
