I want to go home, is something many people living with Dementia say. Families can become frustrated when their loved one IS residing in the family home of 30 + years or it's not possible for them to return to their house.
How do you answer this question:
1. Acknowledge the loved ones feelings of home, know that home is not a physical place. Home is a place of familiarity, feeling of safety, feeling of comfort, a 'happy place'.
Speak positively about 'home'
Did you live in the city or in the country?
Did you or your Mom work outside the home?
I bet you kept a beautiful home
Don't argue or try to convince the person that 'this is their home'. It can be very frustrating to you both, but may cause unwanted behaviors.
2. Know that people living with Dementia reverse in time. If they are unable to recognize their house of 30+ years, this gives you an idea of where they are in the disease process.
Accept where your loved one is in the process
Join a support group
Arrange for Respite care
Don't stress out or over think "I want to go home". Go with the flow, you'll have a more positive result. 🙂
