Things I learned from jiu jitsu that apply to real life.

Be a step ahead of others to get ahead. I don’t procrastinate, I just do. I used to justify putting something off by telling myself I needed to think about it more. Now I act right away and pivot if I need to.

Don’t expect to be good at something without putting in the hours. (Aka years). I see so many people get aggravated and quit when they don’t hit a goal they’ve barely spent any time on. When I expect results, I double the time I think it will take in my head and then work like I need accomplish it in half the time.

Don’t work on stupid s**t and be open to being wrong. I’d rather win than be right. Ego is a dangerous thing. Also, I don’t take advice from people who haven’t done what I’m trying to do.

Be patient and wait for good setups, rather than force it. This means passing on small opportunities and being patient in order to capitalize bigger later . Being patient in this regard has been tough for me. Forcing comes at the expense of wasting energy for an easier/better opportunity that will come later. Learn to say no.

Bait a limb rather than stay in a stalemate. In other words, I take more calculated risks to get a head. People are afraid of failing, so they stay stuck. I always ask myself what’s the worse and best that could happen if I take a risk. If the reward outweighs the risk, then I’ll ‘bait a limb’ to get ahead. This kind of repetition builds confidence and grit.

Have fun and don’t take things too seriously. We are all going to die and I firmly believe at the end of my life and I’m going to laugh at how serious I took it, and make fun of myself for it. I know this is cliche but enjoy the journey.
