Lake Anna News Alert...

The most recent sampling event for Lake Anna occurred 6/17/2024 at four sites in the Upper & Middle North Anna & Pamunkey Branches. Results for one site in the Upper North Anna Branch, which represents the waterbody from the headwaters of North Anna River to the Rte. 522 bridge, contained cyanobacteria at levels which pose a health concern. One cyanotoxin was detected at both Upper North Anna and Pamunkey Branch sites but were below levels of health concern. As a result the Virginia Department of Health has issued a no swim advisory on 6/21/2024 for Upper North Anna Branch.
Results for one site in the Upper North Anna Branch, which represents the waterbody from the headwaters of North Anna River to the Rte. 522 bridge, contained *cyanobacteria cell densities at levels which pose a health concern.

*Cell densities of an identified cyanobacteria species were above an actionable VDH threshold

One **cyanotoxin was detected at both Upper North Anna and Pamunkey Branch sites, but concentrations were below levels of health concern. An advisory was issued on 6/21/2024 for Upper North Anna Branch.

**A particular cyanotoxin was present, but at a concentration below an actionable VDH threshold.
This means there is a no swim advisory issued for the following Lake segment: Upper North Anna Branch- From the upper inundated waters of the North Anna arm, to include the “Sandbar” of the lake and downstream to the Rt. 522 Bridge.
The next sample event is anticipated for on or about the week of July 15 (weather dependent). The status report for those results should be released the following week.

From LACA Water Quality Committee

We are providing our members and colleagues with an update on the Lake Anna Advisory Committee's (LAAC) phosphorus remediation program.

As reported in several of LACA's monthly newsletters, the Virginia General Assembly appropriated $1 million dollars for a Lake Anna Cyanobacteria Mitigation and Remediation Program in the state's FY24 budget amendments. The funding is being used to remediate excess phosphorus levels in two of the lake's three main tributaries. Phosphorus remediation will be implemented by EutroPHIX on the upper 600 acres of the North Anna River and Clean Streams Rivers and Lakes (CSRL) will implement remediation efforts on Terry's Run.

Dominion Energy has approved these applications and the technical approach being implemented by both contractors have been reviewed by the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ), the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (VDACS), and the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources (DWR). We have also notified the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) and the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) on the timeline and the approaches that both contractors will be implementing.

Treatments begin this week (June 17th) on both the North Anna River and in Terry's Run. A timeline of activities for both the upper portion of the North Anna River and Terry's's Run is available for your awareness (click the link to download the timeline).

Many of you will ask about Fourth of July celebrations with fireworks. There will be many fireworks shows around the lake this weekend but the largest will be that put on by the Lake Anna Civic Association, Saturday, July 1. Read the article here from Lake Anna Magazine for all the details.

Tonight’s the night to enjoy a special Lake Anna tradition - the annual Lighted Boat Parade. Here’s the route with ETA’s. There’s lots of great family entertainment with an amazing Vendor Village, Santa, Rappahannock Electric Cooperative, fire and EMS es**rt from the folks at Louisa County Sheriff's Office and Spotsylvania County Fire, Rescue, and Emergency Management. Viewing points are noted on this map including Lake Anna State Park, Anna Point Marina, High Point Marina & Lighthouse Inn and Lake Anna Taphouse.

Fireworks tonight!

Update: Fireworks are ON!
Tonight is the night… for the Lake Anna Civic Association managed Lake Anna Fireworks Show at 9:15 P.M. It is shot from D**e 2, making it visible to residents and visitors from both the public and private sides of the lake. However, no general parking is available. This s a boating event or visible from shoreline properties nearby. A decision on whether to proceed with the shoot in case of pending inclement weather is made by noon on the day of the shoot. Notification is made through LACA e-grams and posts on the page and website. A rain date is typically the following Saturday. Remember, if you don’t have lights for your watercraft, don’t go out in it. This is both a wonderful and busy night on the water and our friends from law enforcement will be present to ensure it remains a safe night. Let’s not complicate their job. There’s also heavy traffic on the Louisa side of the lake roads so be aware out there and enjoy this special Lake Anna tradition responsibly.

Vito's On The Lake has exciting news… they now have QR codes on each and every boat slip at the Lake Anna Plaza. Guests can simply scan the code, order their food, pay for it, and Vito’s staff will deliver it to them to their boat. You don’t even have to get out of your boat! Pizza delivery to your boat - awesomeness!
