American Indian Student Services is happy to be working alongside the new Pan-Afrikan Center Director, Azania Tripp!

Multicultural & LGBTQIA+ Student Services is excited to announce that Azania Tripp has been named the new Director, Pan-Afrikan Center.

Azania Tripp grew up in St. Cloud Minnesota. She has a Bachelor of Science in Youth Studies from the University of Minnesota and a Masters in Social Work from the University of Michigan. Her professional career began in Detriot, Michigan focusing on su***de prevention, adverse childhood experiences, and culture as sovereignty programming development. After Michigan, she moved to New York City, she worked for an organization that supported Men of Color that were previously incarcerated, experienced unstable housing and substance abuse. Her experience then expanded as site director in developing housing for youth and young adults. She supervised staff, provide counseling services, and did grant writing. As the Diversity Specialist at North Hennepin Community College, she organized the school’s first African American Immersion tour class. Her professional philosophy is implanting courageous communication to enhance people’s growth of the self and the community. Courageous communication is creating powerful spaces where people know their worth and dignity. Azania also pursues her artistic creativity in making beautiful unique collage jewelry and her current reading focuses on Afrofuturism.

Join us tomorrow for Summer 2020: A Monthly Dialogue

On behalf of MSS & LGBTQIA+ Student Services, we would like to acknowledge that this time has carried a lot of resurgence of racial trauma for our students and communities, in particular Black students.
We recognize that this is one of many statements of commitment to racial justice during these times. However, we still want to let you, our students, know that we are thinking about you. Higher Education is rooted in white supremacy, and therefore it is our responsibility to focus our work on holding our institution accountable, and that is an ever-evolving goal. We stand with our students, and we aim to hold Augsburg accountable, as well as dismantling white supremacy in all spaces.
A new initiative that will begin this summer will invite students to engage with each other and MSS & LGBTQIA+ Student Services in discussions. Our liberation is interconnected, and we want to honor that with on-going monthly dialogues that allow us to do the work of community organizing and racial healing. The first of these meetings will be held on July 16th, 2:00 PM, via Zoom. It will be “Monthly Dialogue: Summer 2020” focused on rest, recovery, and connection, and a look at how this summer has influenced all of us.

Meet Carmen Perez, one of our awesome Augsburg University students:

Carmen Perez is a student at Augsburg University where she is pursuing her degree in the Master of Arts in Leadership program. She is an enrolled citizen of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe. Carmen hopes to use her degree to work in nonprofit organizations that support and serve Indigenous communities. Outside of work and school, Carmen's hobbies include reading, writing and going on nature walks. She is also a mother of two young children and loves to spend her time with them most of all. Carmen is set to graduate Spring 2021.

Augsburg TRIO McNair Scholars program is currently recruiting for the 20-21 academic year (students would be admitted Fall 2020). Eligible applicants will be juniors (or juniors by the end of Spring 2021) and available to conduct full-time research during Summer 2021.

Additionally, because this is a federally-funded program, eligible applicants must also meet the following criteria:
- U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident
- BOTH Low-income (as defined by the current federal low-income levels) AND a first-generation college student (neither parent graduated from a 4-year institution)
and/OR a member of a group underrepresented in higher education (African American, Hispanic/Latinx, American Indian, Alaskan Native)
- At least a 2.8 cumulative GPA (3.0+ prefered)

Eligible students from all majors are welcome to apply, though they typically don't work with students that are pre-health/med, pre-law, or business.

LGBTQIA+ Student Services wants to remind & reiterate our commitment to ending sexual violence, sexual assault, & domestic violence.
If you or someone you know is a survivor of sexual or domestic violence, you have options, you have support, and you have our word that we will believe you!
Max and others are currently working on a comprehensive landing site, to report any and all concerns - including sexual misconduct. This site will allow students, employees, and community members alike to report concerning behaviors or incidents that happened on or off campus. This will allow for a better (and more transparent) process in handling Title IX, conduct, Discrimination & Bias cases and beyond.
If you or someone you know has experienced sexual assault, you may always reach out to Dean of Students, Sarah Griesse. You may always talk with faculty and staff, however, please know all individuals but CWC & Campus Ministry staff are mandated reporters.

The 34th Annual Twin Cities American Indian Graduation Celebration is on Thursday, June 25, 2020 via Zoom at 3pm. Since 1986 there has been a group of volunteers from post-secondary institutions that puts this celebration together. If you have/are student(s) that identify as American Indian and graduated this academic year please participate.

Augsburg will cancel classes and suspend operations Thursday and Friday, June 4 and 5, to mourn and reflect on the murder of George Floyd.

Thursday is an important day for our community, as a memorial service for George Floyd will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. at North Central University. The service will be live-streamed via media outlets. Many will want to pause to reflect and commit to the important social justice work ahead.
