Below is information about opportunities for Minneapolis residents to weigh in on the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency’s Metro area
Did you know the Twin Cities metro is bulging with trash? The seven-county metro generated 3.3 million tons of waste in 2021. This number is expected to grow 19% by 2042. In 2021, the metro’s recycling rate dropped to 45%, a 4% reduction from the previous year, and far short of the state’s goal of achieving a 75% recycling rate by 2030.

Juneteenth
Juneteenth is a holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the United States. It is also called Emancipation Day or Juneteenth Independence Day. The name “Juneteenth” references the date of the holiday, combining the words “June” and “nineteenth.”
Juneteenth was originally celebrated in Texas, on June 19, 1866. It marked the first anniversary of the day that African Americans there first learned of the Emancipation Proclamation, more than two years after it was initially issued. The holiday was originally celebrated with prayer meetings and by singing spirituals and wearing new clothes to represent newfound freedom. Within a few years, African Americans were celebrating Juneteenth in other states, making it an annual tradition. Learn more.

The Historical Legacy of Juneteenth Juneteenth is an often overlooked event in our nation’s history. On June 19, 1865, Union troops freed enslaved African Americans in Galveston Bay and across Texas some two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation.

Summer Safety Tips 2022
We want you all to have a fun and safe summer here are a few reminders:
1. Sun protection- use sunscreen (apply as needed), stay in cool shaded area and limit time outside when temperatures are high
2. Stay hydrated by drinking water and clear liquids.
3. Avoid heat exhaustion- limit time outside and activities
4. Never leave your child alone in a car, not even for a minute.
5. Make sure your child has a properly fitted helmet when riding bikes, scooters, etc.
6. Always keep your eyes on your child when in or around water, without distraction. Bring
someone along to the pool or beach to help you if you have multiple children.
7. Always use a lifejacket when in or near water and boating.
***Remember, children, especially babies cannot regulate their body temperature as readily as adults
so you can’t always tell if they are ok just by looking at them. When children/babies are overheated,
they can dehydrate rapidly and become lethargic, irritable, and drowsy.***

June is Pride month
“Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Q***r (LGBTQ+) Pride Month is currently celebrated each year in the month of June to honor the 1969 Stonewall Uprising in Manhattan. The Stonewall Uprising was a tipping point for the Gay Liberation Movement in the United States. In the United States the last Sunday in June was initially celebrated as ‘Gay Pride Day,’ but the actual day was flexible. In major cities across the nation the ‘day’ soon grew to encompass a month-long series of events. Today, celebrations include pride parades, picnics, parties, workshops, symposia and concerts, and LGBTQ Pride Month events attract millions of participants around the world. Memorials are held during this month for those members of the community who have been lost to hate crimes or HIV/AIDS. The purpose of the commemorative month is to recognize the impact that le***an, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals have had on history locally, nationally, and internationally.” Census
