Artist talk with Ivy Mattson on Saturday July 13th at 9:30 at the Super Charged Printmakers Studio in the Casket Arts Building.
Ivy Mattson is a functional ceramicist in the current show Earth Grace | Mud Beauty.
Based in Minneapolis, MN, her wheel thrown and altered work is highly decorated, projecting joy, wonder, and curiosity–values that are echoed in her teaching practice. Mattson first began working with clay while earning her BA in Art Education at Concordia College in Moorhead, MN. She worked as a ceramic studio artist at the Plains Art Museum in Fargo, ND, while teaching art in Moorhead before moving to Minneapolis. She completed the MN New Institute for Ceramic Education Program in 2023 at Northern Clay Center, while continuing to teach and make art in the inspiring community of the Twin Cities. Through reflections of nostalgic memory, Mattson experiences a cathartic process in making each piece while she hopes to help those who experience her work by recapturing and revitalizing the present moment in light of the past.

Casket Artist Spotlight: Andrea Canter Artworks
Since taking up acrylic and mixed media painting 7 years ago, I explore landscape and cityscape through layers of paint (acrylics, house paint, spray paint) and, more often, through layers of paint, art papers, and found materials. I am continuing to build two primary bodies of work--“Imaginary Landscapes” and “Urban Abstractions,” as well as working on a new, ongoing project, “Posthumous Collaborations With My Father,” using prints from his carved woodblocks as the foundation for further explorations with mixed media, collage, and monoprinting.
Visit Andrea's studio during Second Saturdays to see this work in person!
July 13 and August 10, 11-4 at Casket Arts, Studio 218: My special summer open studios will feature live music and fabulous guest artists. July 13, guest artist Kathy Johnston, ceramics. Kathy produces functional works (bowls, plates, cups, etc) with really cool glazes. Well-known guitarist John Penny plays jazz and more from about 1-2:30 pm. On August 10, my guest artist is Jay Sieler, who paints amazing portraits of cats and dogs that have unique personalities (yes, he takes commissions). The music in early afternoon will be provided by another popular Twin Cities guitarist, Joel Shapira. I will be exhibiting new works, hand painted flower pots, and notecards.
Artist highlight: Amy Sundby,
At the heart of my work is a profound appreciation for the interconnectedness of life and art. Whether through the joyful chaos of my illustrations, the detailed beauty of my nature mandalas, or the intimate storytelling of my portraits, I strive to create art that resonates with the viewer on an emotional level. My goal is to inspire a sense of wonder and appreciation for the hidden magic in the world around us, encouraging others to see the beauty in the small details and the grand patterns of life.
Amy will be open for Second Saturday, July 13th. Visit Studio 145 to see the work in person!

“I SEE FLOWERS” an exhibition of paintings & drawings by Duk Ju L. Kim!!! ONLY TWO DAYS LEFT TO EXPERIENCE THESE IMPORTANT PAINTINGS.
@ NE SCULPTURE I Gallery Factory, 1720 Madison Street NE, MPLS, MN 55413
Exhibition runs through Saturday June 1st. Gallery Hours: Thursdays, Fridays & Saturdays 12-5pm
Duk Ju L. Kim’s paintings burst and seethe with life. Though nominally abstract, they are full of limbs, eyes, blood, and other uncharacterized but obviously organic elements, all in furious motion. It may not be clear where these loose masses of flesh are headed, but they seem desperate to get there.
Duk Ju’s paintings & drawings are obviously the product of a serious reckoning with the world around her. When asked whether she feels like a part of an artistic community in Chicago, Duk Ju says she knows many creative people, most if not all of her friends are artists, but that her art is her own. “I don’t belong, nor am I active with a group of artists that share a vision—I never have been.
Duk Ju’s inclination in her work is to reveal the contradictious and complex elements that exist in being alive and conscious humans. Gravity, violence, grace, humor, and beauty all coexist—which can be both exquisite and perverse, exposing and intertwining the hidden with the obvious—pulling the inside out and pushing the outside in.
Duk Ju is represented by Zg Gallery in Chicago, Illinois

Our Story
Over 140 artists and art-based businesses inhabit the Casket Arts Community. Most of its tenants run full-time working studios, but open their work spaces for First Thursdays every month as well as for Art-a-Whirl, Open Casket and many other exhibits and showings throughout the year.
The Casket Arts Community houses three of the newest old factory buildings in Northeast Minneapolis, plus the NE Sculpture Factory. The three historic structures - the Casket Arts Building, the Carriage House and the Factory, were converted to studios in 2006. The structures are stunning - aged brick, century old wood floors, cast concrete, ancient iron and steel. All the buildings have been beautifully restored to maintain their historic character.
