It all started with a vision to create a space where real people can come together over real food. That's how Breaking Bread Cafe was born in 2015. Over the past eight years, we proudly served over 455k meals to our Northside community.
"We take our role in the Northside neighborhood seriously, and it's very bittersweet to announce the closing of Breaking Bread Cafe on August 25. At the same time, we are excited to announce our new Breaking Bread food truck to continue to serve cafe favorites," states Tasha Powell, co-founder and President of Appetite For Change.
Our commitment to our community remains strong as AFC’s food truck will let us participate in events and distribute meals to individuals with transportation barriers. Additionally, we are driving our focus on Breaking Bread Catering so people can support our mission while enjoying the delicious food we are known for.
Stay tuned for more announcements. We will be celebrating the connections and impact made in this space from August 21-25. Together we’re building a movement for access to real food. Let’s make every bite count!

Taking it back to our roots! 🌿
Collard Greens, originating from West Africa, made their way to America through the resilience of enslaved Africans who preserved their culinary traditions. We proudly honor this rich history by serving authentic and flavorful collard greens that pay tribute to the traditions passed down through generations.
🥬 Not only do collard greens have a fascinating historical background, but they are also highly nutritious, packed with vitamins, minerals, and fiber. These leafy greens are known for supporting heart health, aiding digestion, and providing anti-inflammatory properties!
The Urban Agriculture team at Appetite For Change planted collard greens last week, ensuring a bountiful harvest for delicious meals this Fall! Pop by the Cafe to experience some of the best Twin Cities collard greens five days a week! 🌱

We're featuring Appetite For Change Cofounder Princess Titus this Women's History Month!
Princess Titus is a passionate advocate, a safe space, and a welcoming glow in every room! Since the beginning, she's been bringing people together to envision a food system where the people have a voice and power. Her heart is drawn to AFC's Urban Farms; they offer spaces for people to connect and heal in the land.
Princess enjoys writing, poetry, rapping, vegan gumbo (by Chefff Lachelle), and speaking about healing internal and external environments. She's passionate about children, teaching, and setting a strong foundation for our families and the world. Recently, Princess was awarded as one of seven awardees in the Black Legacy and Leadership Engagement Initiative! The initiative through the Pohlad Family Foundation centers wellness in Black activism and supports community leaders creating systemic change.
"Women's History Month is about acknowledging and thanking the shoulders that I stand on; the Ida B Wells in the narrative, the Audrey Lorde in the power of the people in the revolution, and my grandmothers Odessa and Laura who grew and cooked food." - Princess Titus
Next time you're in the Cafe, say hi!
Ohh, and ask Princess about the galangal and blue potatoes she's growing in her living room!

You may know this deliciously cheesy meal as Macaroni and Cheese... but do you know its history?
Mac and cheese is a celebratory dish representing freedom, soul food, and Black culinary history. James Hemings is the culinary mastermind behind the mac and cheese we know today. Hemings was an enslaved man most of his life and became a free man in 1796. He studied French cuisine in the late 1790s, where he trained as a master of fine cuisine, French pastry, and learned about French Macaroni Pie. After returning to the states, Hemings tweaked and Americanized the dish creating this iconic food. In 1796, as a free man, Hemings pursued his career as a chef working in Philadelphia, Europe, and Baltimore.
Hemings' legacy carries on today as we celebrate Black culinary history and the dish known around the world as mac and cheese!
Needing a little taste of Spring? Hop by the cafe any day during the week for a refreshing glass of infused water with your meal! 🍋

A sweet potato is not just a sweet potato.
Behind every sweet potato, you’ll find history, tradition, perseverance, and joy!
George Washington Carver, a Black scientist, educator, and inventor, developed more than 100 uses for sweet potatoes, including postage stamp glue, vinegar, molasses, and synthetic rubber. His research has been instrumental in changing Southern agriculture and rebuilding Black farms after the destruction of cotton farming. Carver's inventions, recipes, and scientific discoveries made a lasting and historical impact to this day.
Therefore, a sweet potato is not just a sweet potato; it's a culinary legacy of Black Americans!
