On this day in 1966, the US teen magazine Datebook, published an interview with John Lennon, who controversially said of The Beatles, "We're bigger than Jesus now." His words caused a media firestorm in the United States, where many Christians were outraged. Gratz Sewing could not and would not ever make that type of claim, but we are however, bigger then a breadbox. Come in for a visit today. Lots of good garage sale items available as well as our usual parts, notions, thread, etc. Open 10 to 6

On this day in 1927 Baseball's Ty Cobb collected career hit # 4,000. He went on to get 189 more before his retirement. He was baseball's all time leader in hits until Pete Rose passed him up years later. By most accounts Mr. Cobb was an angry, mean, and racist man. Not a very good human being. No denying his baseball greatness though. In the Hall of Fame and on almost all top 10 greatest player lists.I know this has nothing to do with sewing or sewing machines, but baseball is one of my passions and has been since age 7 or 8. Sew be it. We are open Today, Friday and Saturday to sell you stuff, give advice, fix your machine, or talk baseball.

On this day in 1984 Democratic Presidential candidate Walter Mondale put forward Geraldine Ferraro as his Running mate. This made Ferraro the 1st women ever nominated for Vice President by a major U.S. political party. Even though this ticket eventually lost to incumbent President Ronald Reagan in a landslide, it was and still is a pretty big deal. We at Gratz Sewing have no President or Vice President, only self proclaimed "Ruler For Life" David Gratz. Come in and meet the man himself. Open today and tomorrow 10-3:00PM.

07/10/2024

On this day in music history Brian Jones of The Rolling Stones and Jim Morrison of The Doors passed away. Jones in 1969 --- Morrison in 1971, both were 27 years old. Jones had been given the boot from The Stones about a month earlier. Morrison had an apparent heart attack in his apartment bathtub while Jones died drowning in his home swimming pool. On a more upbeat note, Gratz Sewing is open today 10 to 6.

American television producer and entertainer, Bob Keeshan, born on this day in 1927. Most of you probably know him as "Captain Kangeroo". Also on this day in 1871 the Yen was adopted as Japan's official monetary unit. Create a band name from these events..... Yen and the Kangeroos with their big hit "I've Got Money In My Pocket". Think about it. Gratz Sewing open today 10-6. Come and buy some stuff. Tell a friend or foe about our store.

A somewhat by chance meeting of 2 hopeless alcoholics in 1935 in the city of Akron, Ohio leads to the founding of Alcoholics Anonymous. June 10th marks the start date of Akron surgeon Dr. Bob's sobriety after working with New York stockbroker Bill W. for a month or so. AA lists this day as their official start. Over the years this program has helped countless people worldwide to get and stay sober. Some we know personally. It has been a model for many other 12 step addiction programs which followed. Thank you AA.

Two large historic events took place on this day. 1944 ---D-Day --- The Allied Invasion of Normandy. A brutal battle of World War 2, but one which changed the whole course of the War. If you know little or nothing about this, maybe watch the first part of the movie "Saving Private Ryan" from 1998. 1968---Senator Robert F. Kennedy dies after being shot the previous night, while campaigning for the Democratic Presidential nomination in California. Kennedy was on a roll and my guess is that he would have ended up with the nomination and defeated Nixon in the General Election. Certainly would have changed that time period and all the years that have passed since. Nothing this Historic is happening at Gratz Sewing, but this month marks 75 years in action. My Grandfather, Francis, bought our original North Minneapolis Location in June of 1949. We are open today 10 to 6PM. Stop on By.

On this day, in the year 1911, the First Indianapolis 500 auto race was held. The winner Ray Harroun finished the race in an approximate time of 6 hours and 42 minutes. Avoiding too many cautions they now run it in under 3 hours. I guess speed is always been the game in auto racing and a lot of times it also seems that way in life. Maybe for a brief time today we should slow way down and look at a few of the small wonders of this earth. Enjoy the day.

Memorial Day. Gratz Sewing closed. For a few minutes today try and ignore all the talk of BBQ's, Sales, 3 day weekends, and the unofficial start to Summer and think about the real Meaning. Thank you.

Maybe we can add 2024, "Gratz Sewing helped a bunch of customers". We are open today 10-6.

Today we make mention of Bluesman Robert Johnson who was born on this date in 1911. Place of birth was Hazelhurst, Mississippi. Both his life [ 27 years] and his recording career [7 months] were short, but his influence on future blues/ rock and roll musicians was huge. His guitar playing, songwriting, and vocal skills were raw yet exceptional. Eric Clapton once said,"Robert Johnson to me is the most important Blues musicians who ever lived." You don't have to be sad to listen to the Blues, but sometimes it helps. If your sewing machine is giving you the Blues, sometimes Gratz Sewing can help. Big repair, small fix, new machine ----we are here for you. Open today and tomorrow 10 - 6.

The year was 1941, today's date----May 1st. Arguably the greatest film of all time "Citizen Kane" has it's premier in New York City. The year was 1967, also today's date -----Elvis Presley marries Priscilla Beaulieu at the Aladdin Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada. Today, think about "Rosebud" and think about The King. Oh, I guess you can also think about Gratz Sewing. We are open today 10-6.

On this day in 1985 Coca-Cola releases 'New Coke". The new formula was so unpopular that the original Coke was re-introduced as "Coca-Cola Classic" soon afterward. One of the biggest, "What Were They Thinkin " moments in Retail History. Here at Gratz Sewing we may have an occasional "What Up With That", but hopefully never a fall-out to this degree. We are open today 10 to 6. Thanks for your support.
