Hi all,

In anticipation of the pending snowstorm, we are going to have an early release from school tomorrow at 1:30pm. This means that buses will leave at 1:30 and ride times should be pretty typical at that hour. The most current information from the National Weather Service indicates that snow may begin at around 9am and then ramp up at about noon and snow for the next 12 hours or so. Our concern is that if it continues to snow throughout the morning and afternoon we may have already long bus rides (some over an hour) that turn into 2+ hour rides in worsening conditions.

This decision is not an easy one to make, knowing that some families will have difficulty finding care earlier in the day. We will not be providing after school care tomorrow so that our staff can also commute home safely. We hope that making this call the day before will provide time for families to make arrangements. Other schools that use our transportation company are making similar calls and we hope that the decision proves to be the correct one. Students will still be in school for 2/3 of the day and we are making the choice of erring on the conservative side.

By staying until 1:30pm all students will have been fed. The fourth graders will still be able to go on their field trip to the Extraordinary Women exhibit at the MN History Center, although that will end early and students will be back for early dismissal. And our 7th and 8th graders will attend all four core content classes before release.
Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Thanks,

Andrew

This morning, we visited residents at Catholic Eldercare as a part of our Expedition about overcoming challenges. The kids interviewed elders about challenges they've overcome (e.g. moving from another country, fighting in a war, living through poverty). It was such a heartwarming and fulfilling experience for the kids, teachers, and elders!

"The Rose Ceremony - a New City tradition! This morning, 8th graders gave a handmade rose to kindergarteners, welcoming them into our school community. At the end of the year, kindergarteners will give the 8th graders a rose as they send them off to high school."

Join us in celebrating Hispanic Heritage month which began on September 15th and runs through October 15th.

"Each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15, by celebrating the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America.

The observation started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period starting on September 15 and ending on October 15. It was enacted into law on August 17, 1988, on the approval of Public Law 100-402.

The day of September 15 is significant because it is the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September18, respectively. Also, Columbus Day or Día de la Raza, which is October 12, falls within this 30 day period."
