My travel sketches have been the best way of capturing a sense of place for me over the years. My oldest sketches go back 50 years when I was in the Peace Corps in West Africa and have included Paris, south of France and my local neighborhood! Whether you want to save memories from a trip, a day at the lake, the perfect flower or cappuccino...a unique drawing is perfect! I will have my all sketchbooks, tools and art supplies ready the first hour of each day during Art-A-Whirl® so stop by Studio 406 in the California Building and explore.
April in Paris?
How about a little Parisian cafe? This cafe was just down the street from my little apartment the last time I was in Paris.

The year: looking back and ahead
I have nearly 100 finished pieces listed in my inventory books. This was the year of collages and abstracts and mixed media experiments. Now I am working on two commissions and planning ahead for new ideas....hopefully BIG!
A little look back, but eyes forward to the new year- https://mailchi.mp/a70113b42ca3/dont-look-backeyes-forward
SOLD. SOLD. SOLD. My first experiment with a painted frame. It's boxed up and on it's way to a new home!
Love this handmade rustic paper.
When in doubt, I pull out an interesting surface, a cool hunk of paper and lay down some paint.
It’s such a busy time so my mind is scattered and the lists are long so when I have a bit of studio time, I tend to just explore.
So when you search through the “orphan art” bins look for those abstracts, with their layers of paint, stencils, mixed media and whatever!
Open for studio visits, DM for details.

Art at the Heart
Saturday, Feb 10. Save the date.
Chairs, chairs, chairs.
The places, spaces and objects that I have painted are figurative without necessarily showing the figure. Chairs are like that too. The viewer places themselves in that space, in that item of clothing. It evokes memory of another time…whether mine or yours! So when you find a chair, shoes, dress or hat, it’s a little bit of memory and history.

the collages?
For years I have collected items in very neatly labeled boxes, bins, drawers called COLLAGE.
I had a beer bottle label from Tahiti, cafe napkins from Perugia and Paris, a restaurant place mat from my 1950s childhood home… and hand-written invoices and business paperwork from my mother’s small business in the 60s. Really important stuff right? This year I decided to take the big step and started cutting, pasting and gluing!
So when you search through the “orphan art” bins look for those collages, with their little bits and pieces of memory and history.
LIFE…all variations on a theme!

New work: abstracts
I have long wanted get comfortable with the world of abstract art. I love it as a collector but never understood HOW to make it. At first I just added more surface texture to my usual subjects, like dresses, then played with a palette knife and other tools, colors paints, and experimented with acrylic and mixed media…all such fun! In the past couple of years I took some workshops where I had to approach a painting from the opposite starting point from my usual. That was eye-opening and very liberating. So the experiments and the FUN continues.
So when you search through the “orphan art” bins look for those abstracts, with their layers of paint, stencils, mixed media and whatever!
More variations on a theme!

Paintings & Sketches By Patricia A. Canney
Lately I have been assembling things on hangers, dress forms and coat trees in my studio and get moved around with the light. I paint them from life and photograph them in morning or golden late afternoon light. It’s great fun.
Childhood memories of my parent’s small town café inform paintings of restaurants and interiors. Paintings of garments and shoes remind me of my grandmother who worked as a tailor in a men’s store….or of my mom who taught me to sew. I love it all.
