It can sometimes feel like construction in Missoula is never-ending. Take a look back in time with newly digitized aerial photos of Missoula and UM’s campus! 📸
Some of our favorite buildings- like the Mansfield Library- are missing from these photos dated back to the 1950s and 60s. Maybe all that construction isn’t such a bad thing!
Aerial photos of Montana and the Rocky Mountain West are being scanned, digitized, and made publicly available by the Mansfield Library Archives and Special Collections. These photos document changes to the region over time, dating back to 1929. Hundreds of these images are already available online through the Montana History Portal, and more are becoming available as staff work through the more than 50,000 images stored in the Archives.

Happy Summer Solstice 2024! Today marks the longest day of the year, and is observed around the world - including at Stonehenge, England, where thousands (including one Mansfield employee who grabbed this picture just hours ago) gather to celebrate the changing of the seasons. Here's to a joyful summer!
Today is Juneteenth, marking 159 years since the end of slavery in the United States. Juneteenth is a day to learn, celebrate, and reflect on the past as we move forward towards justice.
Stop by the Mansfield Library this month to see our lobby displays focusing on Black history. One case focuses on the 25th Infantry Bicycle Corps, a group of 20 Black soldiers who biked from Fort Missoula to St. Louis, and modern efforts to retrace their journey by long-distance cyclist Erick Cedeño.
The other case focuses on the history of drag for Pride month and the very first drag queen, William Dorsey Swann, who was a liberated slave.
We’ve also collected some resources against racism to help you get a head start on learning about the history of racial justice and how to take action. Happy Juneteenth!
Wishing everyone a happy Pride Month from the Mansfield Library!
At the Mansfield Library, we work to build and develop inclusivity both on campus and in the broader community, seeking to create a space where everyone can belong and feel welcome.
Today is Worldwide Knit In Public day! 🧶 If you've stopped by the library since the fall, you may have noticed our communal knitting project in the Commons. This scarf- knitted by library users stopping by for a break- has reached more than 5 feet long! 🤩
We may not be open today, but stop by during our open hours to take a break and knit in public! ✨
Happy Pride Month! 🥳🤩🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️ Come check out our display about the history of drag performance in the lobby. Take a moment to learn about the very first drag queen and early efforts to work towards LGBTQ+ rights.

We will have slightly altered hours tomorrow and Saturday.
Hang in there Grizzlies--the end of the semester is in sight! We’re rounding out this academic year with a Meet the Mansfield spotlight on Teslyn Hartman, the lead student employee in our Circulation department. Teslyn is a senior and has been working at the library since Spring of 2021. She's an Anthropology major, Business Admin minor, with a particular interest in religion, ancient civilizations, and genetics.
Circ students are involved in some of the most important tasks in keeping the library running, including shelving and re-shelving books in the physical collection, retrieving books to place on hold, and collaborating in various projects to improve library services for our campus and community. For her part, Teslyn has been an active member of the “FUN” committee, which has organized several exciting activities for library employees, including an Escape Room, Masquerade Murder Mystery, and Jeopardy Night! Teslyn is passionate about the accessible resources you can find at the Mansfield library, including our accessible technology room, braille translations of government documents, and so much more--enough for an entire ethnographic research paper on accessibility in the library!
Outside of work, she enjoys spending time in Kalispell with her friends and family, working on a variety of crafts such as macramé, wood carving, and origami, and hiking and fishing in the great outdoors (in better weather). She will be spending her last semester (Fall 2024) at the American College of Greece in Athens, a partner university with UM! Best of luck on your Grecian adventures, Teslyn!
