Our Heritage

The story begins early in the nineteenth century, when Mobile was becoming a thriving sea port, and when a small Methodist mission was buzzing with activity. So active in the community was this mission that observers began to call her “The Bee Hive”. Through nearly two centuries of change, five church buildings, relocation, and dozens of pastors, the description still proves true.

Today, the Government Street United Methodist Church is a family of Christian brothers and sisters, from almost every walk of life, who are committed to serving our community by discovering and responding to human needs. We have been a part of Mobile for 180 years. With God’s help we will continue to serve our city for many generations to come.

The Mississippi Annual Conference first appointed the first Methodist missionary to Mobile, Blakely, and Pensacola in the year 1819. We began in earnest when a young man named Henry P. Cook was assigned to Mobile in 1824. He organized the Methodist “society” that swarmed out from the Protestant Union church to form our congregation. Plans were made for a Methodist chapel in the city once land was acquired. Sadly, the Reverend Cook died of yellow fever in October, 1825 before the building was completed. It is said that the first building was nothing more than a thatched roof on supports.

John Russell Lambuth was assigned as missionary to Mobile in 1826. Within a year, the building was complete and the growing congregation quite diverse. Reverend Lambuth’s report tell us that the congregation included “47 negroes, 37 whites, and more than a few Indians”. A Sunday School was established in 1927 to teach the Bible to any who were interested. It was during the time that the nickname “The Bee Hive” came to be applied to the church. By 1832, the congregation was financially self-supporting. Located on the corner of Franklin and St. Michael Streets, the church took the name Franklin Street Methodist Episcopal Church. Because of dynamic growth, a two story “preaching house” had to be built to accommodate the swelling numbers of worshipers.
