The California State Assembly is the lower chamber of the California State Legislature. Alongside the California State Senate, it forms the legislative branch of the California state government and works alongside the governor of California to create laws and establish a state budget. Legislative authority and responsibilities of the California State Assembly include passing bills on public policy matters, setting levels for state spending, raising and lowering taxes, and voting to uphold or override gubernatorial vetoes.

The top two finishers in March, regardless of party, moved on to the November general election. There are eight Democrat vs. Democrat races and four Republican vs. Republican. Two American Independent Party candidates also advanced. And six Assemblymembers are uncontested, barring write-in challengers.

What does a state senator do?
-Represent your constituents, holding meetings in the district and keeping attuned to priorities.
-Participate on some of 22 standing committees, six subcommittees or joint committees, each focused on areas such as labor, health and the environment.
-Introduce as many as 40 bills per two-year session, as well as specific budget items.

Background
The state Senate saw a shake-up in 2022 due to a combination of term limits and new district maps following the 2020 Census. Senators serve staggered, four-year terms, and the 20 odd-numbered districts are on the ballot this year. So some voters didn’t get to pick a state senator in 2022 but will this year.

The current Senate has 31 Democrats and 9 Republicans

What does a U.S. representative do?
As per the Constitution, the U.S. House of Representatives makes and passes federal laws. The House is one of Congress’s two chambers (the other is the U.S. Senate), and part of the federal government’s legislative branch. The number of voting representatives in the House is fixed by law at no more than 435, proportionally representing the population of the 50 states.

Background
California is a key congressional battleground, at least its swing districts. Now, Republicans have a majority of a mere five seats in the U.S. House, and California’s delegation includes 40 Democrats and 12 Republicans.

Looking toward November, California is looming increasingly important for which party will control the U.S. House next year. Both parties are focusing on six swing districts.
