Why are annual eye exams so important?

These digital retinal photos recently taken from a patient in our office highlight how comprehensive eye exams can play a pivotal role in detecting other systemic health conditions. Our patient who hadn’t had an eye exam in several years noticed a change in her vision. She thought she just needed new glasses. While she benefited from an updated glasses prescription, when we checked her retinal health with our state of the art Optos digital imaging system, something much more serious caught our eye.

These photos show many “dot-blot hemorrhages” and “cotton-wool spots” which are typically indicative of uncontrolled diabetes. Our patient did not have an updated physical or blood work at the time of exam. We referred her to see a primary care physician to get these checked to rule out the most likely diagnosis of diabetes.

Cases like these remind us of the privilege and role we have in not only helping our patients see better, but also in helping protect their overall health.
