3:50 p.m. Update - Saturday, September 23rd: The State of Emergency for Morehead City has been rescinded at 4 p.m. on September 23, 2023.

12:30 p.m. update - Saturday, September 23rd: Bridges Street Extension has re-opened to traffic, and the crossing arm was adjusted earlier. There are still occasional scattered traffic light outages, so please be careful when driving across the city.

9:08 Update - Saturday, September 23rd: Bridges Street Extension, between Bald Drive to the western side of the Carteret County Health Department is closed. Please avoid this section of Bridges Street Extension until further updates are released. In addition, the railroad crossing arm by Carteret Community College is down, which is impacting westbound traffic. The public is encouraged to stay home unless absolutely necessary while we remain in a state of emergency.

6:45 a.m. Update - Saturday, September 23rd: As weather conditions permit, service restoration work will continue. Morehead City may experience some intermittent power loss as Tropical Storm Ophelia passes over the area. We encourage you to NOT travel unless emergent in support of our first responders and utilities teams who are in-service throughout the City.

State of Emergency – 8:45 p.m. Update: A State of Emergency has been declared for Morehead City, effective 9 p.m. on September 22, 2023, until further notice.

There are no restrictions in place at this time associated with this State of Emergency, however, the public is encouraged to limit travel as a safety measure. Although Ophelia is currently a tropical storm, it may strengthen into a Category 1 Hurricane by landfall.

8 p.m. Update - Friday, September 22nd: A Hurricane Watch is now in effect for Carteret County. Tropical Storm Ophelia may strengthen to a Category 1 Hurricane by landfall. Severe weather will continue overnight, including the potential for tornadoes. Please have multiple ways to receive weather warnings.

2:15 p.m. Update - Friday, September 22nd: The system has been upgraded to Tropical Storm Ophelia.

5:20 p.m. Update: Carteret Community College will close at noon on Friday, September 22nd.

3:15 p.m. Update: The Carteret County Public School System has announced students will be dismissed three hours early on Friday, September 22nd, and all afternoon and evening activities have been cancelled.

Original Post: A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for the area, beginning Thursday, September 21, due to Potential Tropical Cyclone No. 16 that is forecasted to intensify and impact the area Friday and Saturday. City staff is monitoring the weather and is working to ensure operations will continue smoothly.

Due to the predicted heavy winds, rain and storm surge, the Chalk Festival is postponed until Saturday, September 30th, from 9 a.mm. - 12 noon.

In addition, the Curb Market will be cancelled for Saturday, September 23rd. The Night Curb Market on Thursday will still be held and we encourage you to come view a wide variety of area vendors that will be on site.

It is expected our area will experience tropical storm force winds, and 2-4 inches of rain, with up to 6 inches possible, along with storm surge of 2-4 feet. There is also a potential for tornadoes.

Wednesday, August 30th - 11:05 p.m. Update: This National Weather Service Graphic highlights several cells off the coast that could turn into tornadoes in the Morehead City area. Please remain vigilant and have multiple ways to receive weather warnings.

At this time, we are still under a Tornado Watch until 4 a.m., but encourage you to stay alert in case you need to seek shelter.

NWS 8 p.m. Update: A tornado watch is in effect until 4 a.m. Thursday, August 31st.

NWS 6 p.m. Update: The NWS has released another weather briefing that shows a heightened flood risk, along with the potential for "many tornadoes" through 9 a.m. Thursday. There is a possibility of power outages in the area. Everyone is encouraged to have multiple ways to receive weather warnings overnight. Trash and Yard Debris Pickup - Wednesday, August 30 - 11:45 a.m. Update: At this time, GFL is planning to run the trash pickup route on a delay Thursday. In addition, Morehead City's yard debris pickup will continue as conditions allow. This may change, so please continue to check our website at moreheadcitync.org and official social media pages for updates.

Wednesday, August 30 Update - 8 a.m.: Morehead City and the surrounding area is now under a Tropical Storm Warning, ahead of anticipated effects from Hurricane Idalia.

You are encouraged to finish your storm preparations ahead of the system, which is expected to bring flash flooding and the potential for tornadoes, among other impacts.
