We are excited to announce a collaboration project with Main Street Morgantown for the Preservation Month of May! Our project focuses on the stories of African American entrepreneurs of Morgantown during the 1800s and 1900s. Our goal was to recognize and honor these individuals and their contributions to Morgantown's history and community.
*Displays like the one posted below will tell the story of select Black entrepreneurs of Morgantown's past and can be viewed at the Ward Building*
To celebrate National Historic Preservation Month with Main Street Morgantown, we would like to highlight the Aull Center for Local History and Genealogy! The Aull Center is an annex of the Morgantown Public Library System and is located next door to the Morgantown Public Library.
The Aull Center, historically known as the Garlow House, was designed by prominent Morgantown architect Elmer F. Jacobs for distinguished businessman and rancher Aaron J. Garlow in 1907. Garlow's descendants lived in the home for nearly a century until the property was acquired by the Morgantown Public Library System in 2000 with the help of funds from the William and Josephine Aull Trust. Trust Preservation efforts by the Morgantown Public Library have helped the Aull Center retain its Queen Anne Revival architectural elements of a rounded corner tower, a sweeping porch with Ionic columns, and the locally sourced sandstone exterior as well as interior elements of its original oak wood floors, wall trim, door frames, and stained glass. Beyond architectural preservation, the Aull Center houses collections of primary and secondary resources pertaining to the history of Morgantown, Monongalia County, and West Virginia as well as genealogy of local families. The Aull Center personifies preservation by providing a public resource center for Morgantown with a mission to help patrons access history and memory through education, research, and preservation endeavors.

The Garlows return home! We were excited to welcome 21 members of the Garlow Family last week on a surprise visit. The Aull Center resides in the former Garlow House built for prominent Morgantown banker, Aaron J. Garlow in 1907. One member of the group, a great-nephew of Aaron, lived in the house for some time. He gave us a first-hand account of what life was like in the Garlow House. The surprise reunion was an event filled with entertainment and learning about retracing your family’s roots!
A full house was at the Aull Center last night to welcome literary great, Mark Twain, as portrayed by Doug Riley!
