Friday, July 1, 2022 marks the 20th anniversary of the WV Center for End-of-Life Care’s (the Center) official establishment by the West Virginia Legislature on July 1, 2002. In recognition of this milestone, the Center is pleased to share an overview of the history and important dates of the Center’s existence.
1998 – Funding was provided by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Community-Site
Partnership, the Claude Worthington Benedum Foundation, Project on Death in America,
the West Virginia Humanities Council, the Center to Advance Palliative Care (CAPC), the
State of West Virginia Public Health Bureau, the Soros Foundation, the WV Center for Health Ethics and Law, WVU Health Sciences, and more to support a project called “the West Virginia Initiative to Improve End-of-Life Care.” West Virginia was one of 21 Community-State Partnerships to Improve End-of-Life Care. The West Virginia Center for End-of-Life Care evolved from the West Virginia Initiative to Improve End-of-Life Care.
West Virginia, led by Dr. Alvin Moss, began addressing the needs of the aging population
with a focus on implementing West Virginia’s version of the National POLST form. This would be later named the WV POST (portable orders for scope of treatment) Program. This project was comprised of a 20-member coalition, a major media campaign with Senator Jay Rockefeller and Governor Cecil Underwood, an extensive phone survey, and a summit.
Each of these aspects was focused on collecting information and feedback from health care professionals and organizations, administrators, state agency representatives,
legislators, citizens, consumer groups, and media to ensure the initiative was
representative of the entire state of West Virginia.

To keep our center running, we rely on the help of volunteers for form input and packaging. Most of the volunteers are students at WVU. Our hope is that we can provide them with education on healthcare forms while they graciously provide us with their time and effort. Please help us continue to provide these services to WVU students and Donate Now.

Today is National Donor Day!
Did you know you can store your donor information on the WV e-Directive Registry? Our Registry is the most comprehensive database of its kind in the nation and ensures your forms are available 24/7 for your health care providers.
"The WVU Medicine Transplant Alliance is joining Donate Life West Virginia and the Center for Organ Recovery & Education (CORE) to encourage everyone to share the love this Valentine’s Day by registering to be an organ donor today!
According to Donate Life WV, National Donor Day is a time to focus on all types of donation — organ, eye, tissue, blood, platelets, and marrow. Of the more than 115,000 U.S. residents awaiting a life-saving organ transplant, more than 500 of them are West Virginians. Each registered donor can save up to eight lives and improve 75 more.
It is also a day to recognize those who have given and received the gift of life through organ, eye, and tissue donation, those who are currently waiting for a lifesaving transplant, and those who died waiting because an organ was not donated in time.
“Our state has one of the highest rates of kidney failure in the country. Advanced heart and kidney disease are among the leading causes of death for West Virginians. We believe this needs to change. Nobody should die waiting for an organ transplant,” Michael Shullo, PharmD, WVU Medicine associate vice president for transplant services, said. “The more people who register to be donors, the more lives we can save. Organ donors are heroes and these days, we need more heroes. Be a hero; register to be an organ donor.”
WVU Medicine is home to West Virginia’s first and only multi-organ transplant center, making heart and kidney transplant at an academic medical center a reality for people across the state and region.
For more information on transplantation or to refer a potential kidney or heart transplant patient, contact the WVU Medicine Transplant Alliance at 304-974-3004. To register as an organ donor, visit RegisterMe.org/WVUMedicine."
