The name Michigan is the French form of the Ojibwa word mishigamaa, meaning "large water" or "large lake".

As we celebrate the Thanksgiving season, let's not forget to recognize the history and respect the sovereignty of Michigan’s Native American nations. It's important to honor these Indigenous communities and their role in shaping Michigan's regions. Happy !
