With heat waves sweeping across the country, blue-green algae is appearing in new areas and posing an increased risk to pets.
Found in lakes, ponds or any source of standing water, it’s extremely toxic and consuming it can be fatal. The best way to prevent accidental poisoning is to keep a close eye on pets when they’re around water.
If you think your pet has been exposed, take them to the nearest emergency veterinary hospital and contact the ASPCA Poison Control at 888-426-4435.

We are so happy to welcome Dr. Jeanna LaBarbara to our team! She joined us last week and has already proven to be a wonderful asset. Get to know her below:
Dr. LaBarbara grew up in Charleston, West Virginia where her passion for veterinary medicine started with her love for her many childhood pets. She attended West Virginia University for her undergraduate degree and graduated from the Virginia Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine in 2024. With experience in both general practice and emergency medicine, she realized early on that she loved the long-term client/patient relationships that are formed in general practice.
She shares her life with her loving husband, two bottle-raised cats (Kit and Olive) and her geriatric Cocker Spaniel (Lucky). She has a soft spot for tabby cats and elderly dogs because of her furry children at home. In her free time, she loves reading, crocheting, board games, and hiking. She even just spent her honeymoon hiking in Joshua Tree National Park!
Dr. LaBarbara is excited to join the team and serve the Mt. Juliet community!
