The ECMO Specialist is a well trained, highly experienced RN, RRT, or CCP that has full command and understanding of not only the ✔ ECMO equipment, ✔ ECMO support processes, and ✔ emergent ECMO procedures (including how to AVOID the need for the emergent procedures), but should also understand the ✔ disease process, ✔ ICU care of that disease process, and ✔ how the ECMO support process can best be utilized to provide the most benefit to the patient.

The ECMO Specialist can provide the greatest ECMO Advantage 😉 if they are able to recognize how the ECMO support process impacts the ECMO patient as well as how the patient and disease process impacts the ECMO system.

Talk about customer service! We want to give a shout out Paul Curtis owner of Curtis Life Research (CLR). We use the Eigen Flow for our simulations at our extracorporeal education center in Murfreesboro, TN and at hospital onsite trainings. Recently, our training team was at a client site for two days of high fidelity simulation and discovered a huge internal leak during setup. They contacted Paul who drove over early the next morning to make repairs so they could run the scheduled simulations.

It takes a village…It’s definitely not just a one-person job. From patient selection to cannulation and stabilization, multiple departments come together to ensure success.

“Knowing that centrifugal ECMO pumps are preload dependent and afterload sensitive, the ability to achieve desired flow with reasonable line pressures will depend upon the characteristics of each cannula.
These include:
-inner diameter
-length
-drainage and return ports
-location of the cannula in the vessel

ECMO cannula flow is governed by Poiseuille’s Law which states that the flow rate is directly proportional to the driving pressure multiplied by the fourth power of the radius, divided by the length. In other words...

-Doubling the length of the cannula decreases the flow by half at a given pressure
-Doubling the diameter of the cannula increases the flow 16 times

So…the shorter the cannula and the larger the diameter-more flow!”

🐉 Wow! Talk about helping hospitals fill critical gaps and enhance their teams. One of our incredible ECMO Specialists Pier Mangieri recently had a unique and exhilarating experience while on assignment. During some downtime, he joined the hospital's dragon boat racing team, made up of MD’s, RN’s, hospital C-suite, admins, and other hospital employees. With Pier jumping in to help, they were able to secure first place and win the gold. 🥇

Pier said. “It’s all about team work and timing. It’s actually more difficult than I thought. Incredible workout. lol. They had gone 2 races already before I got there with 2 people short . As soon as we arrived they literally jumped on me to join them, of course I was super excited and agreed. It’s between 300-500 meters. We raced against another boat and really did well, and we were going against the current now. We were trying to be within 1 minute 30 seconds for the run but I believe we ended up just a little over 1:40. Got first place and a gold medal out of it. Every day we can make a difference in being part of a great team!”
