Cocina Zeceña

This weekend we will be having our last two events for the foreseeable future. Due to Chef Jenette’s health, Cocina Zeceña will be on a temporary hiatus. Our focus right now will be her recovery.

During this time Cocina Zeceña will continue to cook and refine what we feel Puerto Rican food is all about. Our plans are to come back better than ever for you our loyal customers.

We want to thank all our supporters. Without you this wouldn’t have been possible. We’ve developed many friendships with our guests and fellow local small businesses.

It’s been an amazing Journey.

This is my Mami. She’s the one who inspired me to get into my Puerto Rican roots.

I remember being 10 years old making the Papa Rellenas and Pastelillos during the holidays. Every year we would have a Christmas party. Everyone would ask us if we will have the “Famous Potato Balls.” My mom would always be in her apron ready to fry and share her food and culture.

When we decided to start this, my inspiration was my mom. I would come over and ask her to show me her ways. She wouldn’t tell me weights or how many cups. Instead she would show tell me a little of this, a pinch of that. Even how to position the pot to make sure everything is cooked evenly.

Even now I still ask her advice. We are constantly learning and evolving.

We remember all those who have fallen during service today. Memorial Day is equally important in Puerto Rico. Puerto Rico has sent more men and women into military service than most states:

18,000 in World War I
65,000 in World War II
61,000 in the Korean War
48,000 in the Vietnam War
10,000 in the Gulf War
38,000 deployments in Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom

More than 25,000 Puerto Ricans are currently active duty. The National Guard with more than 8,400 service members.
