As the temps start to drop, heaters turn on, and indoor humidity decreases, many patients find that Dry Eye tends to worsen in the cool winter months. Dry environments combined with prolonged computer/device use can quickly transition Dry Eye from an occasional nuissance into a painful and debilitating condition.

There are a TON of over-the-counter Artificial Tears on the market, and going to the dry eye aisle can be an overwhelming experience. While every eye is different, the drop I find myself recommending to patients over and over again is a preservative-free drop from the brand Optase.

This drop uses a combo of glycerin, hyaluronic acid, hydrochloric acid, and trometamol to hydrate, protect, and repair the front surfaces of your eye. Using a drop upon waking and/or before starting prolonged computer use can help prevent the onset of symptoms and because they are preservative free - you can use them as needed.

If you find yourself using drops more than 4 times per day, are not finding sufficient relief with drops alone, or just want to make sure your symptoms are indeed dry eye related, it’s always a good idea to make an appointment with your eyecare provider to evaluate your eye health.
