Last year, my family was informed that my Mama June (great grandmother) had only a couple months to live. A great amount of family members did everything they could taking turns requesting time off from their jobs and putting off their busy schedules to be with her but, despite their attempts, it just wasn’t enough. We called in a Hospice group to do whatever they could to help us. The Hospice Volunteers came and sat with Mama June so my family could get out and do errands, among other things. The Volunteers listened to her, found out her interests, and brought poetry and music to the house. After a few days they were even bringing mouth-watering food to her daily. They went above and beyond helping my family and alleviating our stress during this time. I’ve been given the opportunity to start a community project with a hospice group in town.
Through Legacy Hospice, I’m starting a volunteer group called “Leave a Legacy,” where we will be reaching out to the community through phone calls. We have limited landlines available so if you have unlimited minutes, and don’t mind using your phone, that would be spectacular! I need as many participants as I can get.
Basically, we’re going to start off with a training session led by Greg Downs informing what hospice is/is not. I can have up to three training sessions depending on the number of volunteers I get, and when everyone is free. After that, we’ll schedule two or three meetings a week for a couple of hours at a time. You can show up to whichever meeting your schedule allows.
Volunteers will be compensated with a big cookout that Greg and I will be hosting.
