Large Gilt Bronze Buddha Maravijaya, Rattanakosin period (80cm tall)
Likely a gift to a monastery from the King of Siam, Rama IV (Mongkut) 1851-1868

A very large Sukhothai style bronze figure of Buddha in maravijaya, the right hand in bhumisparsha mudra, the left hand is uniquely fashioned to hold the talipot (a prayer fan used by monks in order to retain focus), seated in the virasana pose (the right leg is on the left one).

Traditionally, kings presented prayer fans to monks of high rank and superiors of large monasteries. The fan served to cover a monk's face during prayers, so as nothing could disturb him. This tradition still exists, though it was represented in art only in the 19th century and this style only during the reign of Rama IV.

There is no ushnisha (protuberance on top of the head), emphasizing the Buddha’s “Great Renunciation”. Ancient books clearly state that Buddha had a shaven head. Such figures were produced only during the reign of King Rama IV and it is extremely rare to find one of this size and quality.

Before ascending to the throne as King Rama IV, Mongkut lived 27 years as Vajirañāṇo Bhikkhu, a Buddhist monk and scholar in the Theravada tradition. He was a reformer and founder of the Dhammayuttika Nikaya order. With respect to the representation of the Buddha in art, he also tried to create forms corresponding to the 'veritable' image of the Buddha described in ancient manuscripts.

This is an ivory carving depicting a rural family scene and is attributed to Jean-Antoine Belleteste (1731-1811).
The Belleteste family was one of the foremost families of ivory carvers in France.
There are no signed pieces known by him, nevertheless the attribution of this carving is made on the grounds of the intricate detail of this piece which is consistent with his other work.
The whole is housed in a case.
The fine detailing used for this scene is typical of the work of the Belleteste family of ivory carvers, who were active in Dieppe in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.
Dieppe was a leading center of ivory carving during the 18th and 19th centuries. Jean-Antoine Belleteste and his family were among the most renowned of the ivory sculptors active there at that time.
