Today marks the end of Pride Month, but at the Women's Fund we continue to advocate for gender and racial justice all year round. Our Board Vice President, Cynthia Cummings, shares a powerful statement about why we must continue to advocate for our LGBTQIA+ community.
"As a q***r, Black, woman, I have spent over fifty years advocating for diversity, equity, and inclusion. When I was younger, people would comment on the 'courage' it took to be such a vocal and 'out' le***an. I didn’t understand why it seemed courageous simply to speak the truth and live a life of integrity. Now many years later, as a member of the Board of the Women’s Fund SouthCoast, I’m proud to continue my work in an organization that addresses issues of gender and racial justice. In a time when all our marginalized communities are under attack, I say 'Courage' to everyone who fights for our dignity and freedom."
As we wrap up Pride Month, Women's Fund SouthCoast Board Member, Jen Clarke shares why it's important to celebrate Pride.
"Audrey Lorde’s words—'your silence will not protect you'—profoundly affected me when I first heard them in college and continue to resonate with me both in my daily life as a member of the LGBTQ+ community and at its intersection of my work with the Women's Fund. The rights, concerns and passions I personally embrace are increasingly and brazenly threatened and diminished. Now, as a wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, I cannot silently sit down while our individual and collective voices are needed. And so I stand proudly alongside those who dare claim that we are equal, that we are here and that we will never relent in our advocacy for one another. As the saying goes—'though we are strong alone, we are fearless together.' I am grateful for the privilege the Women’s Fund SouthCoast offers me to stand together and fearlessly let my voice be heard in tangible, meaningful ways."
Words cannot express our gratitude for all who celebrated with us at the 2024 Women’s Fund SouthCoast Grant Ceremony this past Monday. Our work is only possible because of all of you. Here is a sneak peak of some special moments from the evening!
Happy Juneteenth! It is a day of joy and celebration, but also a time to reflect on all that’s been accomplished and what still needs work. The Women’s Fund SouthCoast will always answer that call.
